A Glance at the Week

Although this was a short week, we still accomplished a lot!

I'm happy to say that the students have finished the Student Learning Assessments.  We spent Wednesday and Thursday morning writing the literacy and numeracy digital components of the assessments.  The students worked very hard and I'm so proud of each and every one of them!

Math:  The students wrote their unit test in Patterns and Relations on Friday.  After the test, the students enjoyed playing a few of the Math Fact games that they have learned over the last few weeks.

Next week we will begin our next unit in math which is "Numbers to 1000."  In this unit, your child will:

  • Show a 3-digit number in different ways, using concrete materials, pictures, words, and numbers.
  • Compare and order 2-digit and 3-digit numbers.
  • Skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s forward and backward to 1000.
  • Skip count by 3s, 4s, and 25s forward and backward to 1000.
  • Estimate how many items are in a large collection by comparing it to a known quantity.
Science:  We have finished comparing various kinds of rocks, describing properties of rocks and minerals (colour, lustre, texture and hardness) and classifying rocks and minerals based on these properties.  Next week we will start to study soil, learning that different soils have different compositions, and that component materials include rock fragments and remains of living things.

Social Studies:  This week our focus was on learning about the 7 continents and the 4 oceans on earth.  The students will be writing a quick quiz in the upcoming week to ensure they have a good grasp of these.

Thank you for sending a rock with your child to paint this week.  The students had a great time painting their "Pet Rocks!"  They will be spending some time next week writing about their pet rocks during writer's workshop.
