September 21st - 25th

We had a great start to our week by announcing Miss K as our first classroom V.I.P.  Throughout the week our class had the opportunity to get to know our V.I.P. a little better.

Language Arts

Readers Workshop

During Readers Workshop I continued to conference with students on their individual reading strategies.  Each day after our "read to self" block, the students are required to spend 10 minutes responding to their reading.  The students are asked to write a personal response in their reading log. This allows the students to interpret their text in various ways and to search for deeper meanings.  It also gives me the opportunity to connect with the students on a more personal level.  Once the students have written in their reading log, I will chose students per day to read their response to the class.

Writing Workshop

Our discussions this week about Terry Fox inspired the students to write about their real life heroes.  Today the students finished their "sloppy copies" of their hero writing projects and will be compiling them into our first class traveling book for the year.  Each student will have the opportunity to bring this traveling book home for you to enjoy before passing it on to another family.  The students love sharing their work and especially enjoy reading your kind comments at the back of the book.  Please keep your eye out for the Real Life Heroes Traveling Book coming your way soon!

Math

This week in math we continued our Patterning Unit.  The following goals were covered:
  • extending increasing sequences and solving simple problems using increasing sequences.
  • finding the difference between two numbers by counting backwards.
  • finding the number that is less than the other number using a given difference.
  • finding the difference between two numbers by subtracting, and extending decreasing sequences.

In addition to Patterning, we continued to work on our Mental Math Strategies.  Math facts practice is an essential part of a daily math routine.  Building math fluency isn’t only about speed. It’s also about the strategies that one should use when practicing math facts.  This week we focused on the "Ten Partners" strategy and played the game "Rescue a 10."

Science

We finally got to go on our Rock Walk on Wednesday!
The students enjoyed a picnic lunch in Lion's Park before heading down to the boat launch to collect our rocks. We had a great time searching for different rocks for their collection. They can't wait to sort them according to their different attributes. What can I say.....kids LOVE rocks!

Rock Talk

The students are really enjoying our "rock talks" everyday.  They can't wait to bring rocks from home to show their classmates.

In science we continued working on our "Rocks and Minerals" lapbook.  The students are learning about the 3 types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary) and how they are formed.

Terry Fox Walk/Run

Friday, September 25th was our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk!  It was a beautiful day for the event.  I am so happy to announce that our class collected $48 to be donated to cancer research! Well done 3D! Thank you to all of the parents and volunteers who came out to support the event. Also a big thanks to the Devon Lion's Club for donating apples and granola bars for the students to enjoy after the run/walk.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Mr. C for being chosen as this week's Student of the Week for assembly!
