Congratulations to Mr. C for being chosen as our VIP this week. It was great getting to know you better!
Language Arts
On Monday we started our Words Their Way spelling program. Word sorts will be introduced each Monday in class. Word work will include sorting their words into categories, and noticing similarities and differences between words that sound alike. They will also write sentences that include the week’s word pattern. Students will continue to do weekly spelling homework, and spelling tests. Spelling tests will be on Fridays. For each spelling test I will ask students to spell a random group of 10 of their words for the week. The test will also contain a few new words that follow the spelling patterns studied all week. The main purpose of these spelling tests will be to help guide each student’s instruction, versus memorization of the words.
In our writing workshop, we just concluded our "Real Life Heros - Inspired by Terry Fox" writing activities. We have been really focusing on using proper conventions which includes spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraph structure. Please watch your child's mailbag for our first traveling book coming home.
This week the students completed the digital portion of the Alberta Learning SLA's (Student Learning Assessments). These assessments focus on literacy, numeracy and the competencies of Inspiring Education. The SLA's are written at the start of the year to enable both parents and teachers to identify student strengths and areas needing improvement. To practice this strategy, the students enjoyed playing Resuce a 10.....
In science the students got to experience the life of a Geologist! The students performed a "Pet Rock Experiment" on the rocks gathered during their rock walk. Given a description of the properties of rocks, the students were to determine the colour, hardness, lustre (shininess), texture and the presence of carbonates of their rocks. Please ask your child to tell you what it means if a rock floats.
Congratulations to our Star Student for this week's assembly. I'm so proud of Miss M for working so hard and being a great role model for her peers!

The students were so excited to paint their pet rocks on Friday. Their projects are quite complete, as they were waiting for the rocks to dry before adding accessories. Stay tuned for pics of the final products next week!
