October 6th - 9th

Wishing all of my students and their families a very Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you have a wonderful time spent with family and friends!

Week at a Glance

We had a great start to our week by announcing Miss K as our classroom VIP.  Throughout the week our class had the opportunity to get to know our VIP a little better.  Thank you to Miss K for doing such an amazing job of her current events presentation!

This week the students worked very hard at completing the written components of the Student Learning Assessments, which included literacy and numeracy.  They did a great job and I'm so proud of the students for giving the tests their best effort.

Language Arts

This week we used "The Most Thankful Thing" by Lisa McCourt as a mentor text for our writing project.  After reading this story, the students discussed what they were most thankful for.  They chose their top 10 "Most Thankful Things" and created "Taguls" on the Chrome Books.  The students really loved this project.

Home Reading

Four more students were so excited to reach the 500 minute milestone in our home reading program and fly to India this week!

Reading Response

The students continue to enjoy sharing their reading response during our  "Read to Self" block.

Math

This week in math we covered the follow goals:
  • Continue a repeating pattern given its core.
  • Find cores of repeating patterns.
  • Make and extend patterns with blocks and squares.

The mental math strategy that we focused on this week was Adding Doubles Plus 1 and Plus 2.  To practice this strategy the students played the game Be a Doubles Plus 1 Superkid.

Science

This week the students finished decorating their pet rocks.  They will be spending some time next week writing about their pet rocks during writer's workshop.

We have also finished comparing various kinds of rocks, describing properties of rocks and minerals (colour, lustre, texture and hardness) and classifying rocks and minerals based on these properties.  Next week we will start to study the rock cycle.

Art

This week we used the technique of "dot art" to create fall trees.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Mr. C for being chosen as the Student of the Week for assembly!
