September 14 - 18th

Thank you to all of the parents/guardians who attended the Meet the Teacher night on Thursday night.  It was great to see everyone!

This week we celebrated two birthdays in 3D!  Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Miss K and Mr. C!

Language Arts

Reading Workshop

During our Reading Workshop mini lessons this week we continued to focus on Comprehension.  We discussed that "Reading is Thinking."  Research has shown that simply having students read more is not enough to improve reading skills.  Students need to be engaged in thinking about their reading.  I modeled how to ask questions throughout the reading process while reading the book "Fly Away Home" by Eve Bunting.  Learning to ask questions during the reading process is an important strategy because it teaches a reader to think aloud.

This week I continued to conference with individual students during Read to Self.

Writer's Workshop

This week during writer's workshop, we continued to focus on conventions and writing complete sentences.  The Back and Forth Journals came home on Friday.  The students were so excited to share what they did this week in class.  Please be sure to respond and return the journals on Monday.

Math

This week in math we started our Patterning Unit.  The following goals were covered:
  • find differences between numbers mentally, by using fingers or by using a number line
  • find a number that is more than another number using a given difference
Near the end of the week we began to extend increasing sequences and solve simple problems using increasing sequences.  We will continue working on this goal next week.

In addition to working through our Patterning Unit in Math, we are also focusing on mastery of basic facts. The ability to recall math facts fluently, and with automaticity, provides a foundation for math success. Learning specific strategies helps students commit these math facts to memory, resulting in the ability to perform critical mental math tasks.

Science

Unfortunately our Rock Walk was cancelled on Wednesday due to inclement weather.  However, we have rescheduled for Wednesday, September 23rd.  Fingers crossed that weather cooperates!

This week in science the students worked collaboratively to develop a KWL chart about Rocks and Minerals.  This chart helps to determine the range of the students' background knowledge and areas of students interest.

The students also started putting together their Rocks and Minerals Lapbook. A lapbook is simply a file folder that contains a variety of  mini-books, foldables, and other material that cover detailed information about the lapbook's topic.  It's a fun and engaging way display and interact with information, rather than using the traditional "worksheet."

Rock Talk

The students are so excited about our classroom "rock talk."  Mr. C brought in some rocks from home and talked to the class about why they were special.

Social Studies

In social studies this week the students had the opportunity to use compasses.  Using the compasses, we were able to identify "landmarks" in various directions from the school.

Art

"I Am...." poem and completed art work.
