Language Arts
During writer's workshop this week the students finished up the "sloppy copies" as well as the "good copies" of their persuasive writing assignment. They will be presenting their Cats vs. Dogs arguments to the class next week.
The students are thoroughly enjoying the Charlotte's Web novel study. We tune into 4-5 interesting words each chapter to expand the students vocabulary. When children learn to tune in to interesting words, they build word awareness
and the understanding of words. This leaves them with “thinking power” in their
brain to comprehend and make meaning of what is read. Students
who tune in to interesting words expand their vocabulary by focusing on these
new words and their meaning. By looking for words that are interesting and
unique, children not only increase their vocabulary, but they also enhance their
comprehension. A child must have multiple exposures to a word in order for it to
become a part of his/her vocabulary.
Math
The students were so excited to start our fractions unit this week. I introduced the unit by reading the book "Funtastic Fractions."
Our curricular focus this week included:
- Demonstrating how a whole can be divided into equal parts.
- Describing equal parts of a whole as fractions.
- Representing fractions as parts of a whole using concrete materials.
- Representing fractions using the fraction symbol.
- Comparing fractions with the same denominator.
Science
During science this week the students continued to work on typing up their Diary of an Animal storyboards. They are gaining valuable experience with keyboarding and saving documents.
Social Studies
The students are almost finished gathering information for their Peru presentations. They have been working in their groups to research specific aspects of Peru.
We really enjoyed getting know our VIP this week. He brought in a few of his special items to share with the class. The students especially enjoyed a visit from his dog, Ruby!
Congratulations to Miss S for being chosen for the second time as Student of the Week during assembly. Keep up the great work!
The circus is in town! On Friday the school had a visit from a few of the performers from the Devon Days carnival.
Some fireworks of our own!
The students were beyond excited about Devon Days this weekend. But unfortunately due to the fire ban, this year's fireworks were cancelled. So we decided to create some fireworks of our own during art class. The students used a combination of chalk and oil pastels to make their "fireworks" art projects.
