November 23rd - 26th

It was a short, but busy week in 3D!

Reading Workshop

During reading workshop this week I used The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland as a mentor text to model how to ask questions throughout the reading process. The story of The Lotus Seed is about a lady who brings a very special seed from her homeland. As I read the story to the class I modelled how I stop and ask myself questions about the text. Using this strategy helps to be an active reading and increase comprehension of the story.

Writing Workshop

In our writing workshop time this week we continued to focus on proper paragraph writing. On Monday the students were asked to tell me about their weekend by writing a paragraph in their journal. They needed to include a topic sentence, 4 detail sentences and a concluding sentence in their paragraph.

We also completed our 4th traveling book this week entitled "My Forever Book."

The students also spent time working on their memory album pages this week. Using slideshow on the Chrome books, the students are creating their own scrapbook pages for the end of the year.  I have organized all of the pictures I've taken this year into folders into months and occasions. The students are able to choose the pictures that they would like to include in their memory album. Then they were asked to write their own captions to go with the pictures. They are so excited to be creating their own personalized scrapbook pages!

Travelling Art Program

Every year we have the ravelling art program come to our school. It is a wonderful way to expose children to Canadian artists. Every class has one art piece displayed in the classroom. We also like create a story with one art piece that travels from class to class. The first class started the story with “The Adventures of Jack the Rabbit” and every class then adds to and develops the story. We were so excited to have our turn to add to the progressive art story this week.  The story will be published when the story when it is complete!

Math

The following curricular outcomes were covered in math this week:
  • Count backwards by 2s from any number and by 5s from any multiple of 5.
  • Extend patterns that count by 10.
  • County by 4s and then choose between counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s or 10s.
  • Extend patterns that count by 100.

Science

The focus this week in science was learning and describing how the human ear senses vibrations.  We discovered that the ear has three main parts: The Outer Ear, The Middle Ear and the Inner Ear.  We hear sounds with our ears.  Vibrations move rapidly through the air towards our ears and make part of the human ear vibrate.

Social Studies

We continued our unit on India this week.  The students have enjoyed learning about the Quality of Life in India through the eyes of our friend Ravi.  We had the opportunity to watch a few videos to learn more about the customs and traditions celebrated in India.  One of the favourite celebrations that the students learned about is called "Holi" or the "Festival of Colours."  During Holi, people celebrate the end of winter by throwing coloured water and powder on each other.

Art

This week the students finished painting and colouring their Banyan Tree art project.  The Banyan Tree is the national tree of India.
