Hi parents and guardians! It was so nice to meet many of you this week during "Meet the Teacher Night" and on the first day of school! I look forward to working together this year to enhance your child's learning experience at RBES!
This week we spent some time learning many of the classroom routines and expectations as well as participating in various fun back to school activities.
The students enjoyed finding their names in the "Stars of 3A" word search.
They also got a chance to get to know their classmates a bit better by playing "Find a Friend" bingo. The students had a great time finding friends in the classroom who were able to answer "yes" to the questions on the bingo cards. Some examples of the questions include: find someone who saw the new Secret Life of Pets movie or someone who went camping over the summer. It was a great ice breaker activity for the first day of school.
We kicked off another icebreaker activity by reading "My New Teacher and Me" by Al Yankovic. This is a marvelous story of a rule-driven teacher and his first meeting with a boy named Billy whose imagination is as large as the universe! Billy and his teacher find both that they can learn from each other and that discoveries most often come from people who “look at the world just a bit differently.”
After reading this book the students participated in an activity called "Two Truths and a Fib." This is a fun writing activity that the students loved! The idea behind this activity is that each person gets to share some information about him or herself as the other students try to figure out which statement is incorrect. In addition, everyone is the class gets to see what they have in common with each other.
This week Steve Harmer visited Robina Baker School to present "Motivational Magic" to the students. The theme of his magic show was "Courage, Character and Caring." The presentation was designed to challenge students to make positive choices regarding citizenship and behaviour, while entertaining them with juggling, unicycle riding and making rabbits and doves appear out of nowhere. The students absolutely loved it!
After reading the book we discussed the importance of not interrupting others and then we brainstormed strategies to help keep us from "erupting." The students were then asked to complete the following cartoon strip response activity by illustrating each prompt and writing a short caption to explain.
We also read the story "My Mouth is a Volcano" written by Julia Cook. This a a great read aloud that teaches students about how to have self control and not interrupt or "erupt" when others are talking.
We ended our week by building reading stamina during the "read to self" block.
Have a fantastic long weekend everyone!
