Oct. 31 - Nov 4

Monday was a fun day full of Halloween activities. We started the day off with a group picture and then went to the gym for the parade of costumes.

Then we spent the afternoon playing games, eating snacks and watching a movie. The students enjoyed preparing the bingo cards by filling in their own Halloween words. The best part was nibbling on "rockets" which doubled as bingo chips!

After our bingo game, the students got to participate in three minute-to-win-it challenges. The first challenge was "rocket stacking" to see who could stack the most rockets without them falling down!

"Skittle Suck Up" was the second challenge where the students had to transfer as many skittles from their plate to a cup using a straw!

Finally, the students were challenged to pick up "ghost poop" with chop sticks. The student with the most marshmallows or "ghost poop" in their cup was the winner!

Thank you so much to the parents who supplied food for our Halloween party. It was delicious!

We finished off our party by watching a bit of the movie "Coraline." The students continued to watch it during lunch for the rest of the week.

Reading Workshop

This week I read "A Poppy is to Remember" by Heather Patterson. It's a great book about how the red poppy became Canada's symbol of honouring those who fought for our freedom on Remembrance Day.

Shared Reading

This week we started reading aloud as a class from
our Collections book series. During the strategy mini-lesson I focused on fluency by modelling how to read with expression. The students were given the option to read aloud to the class or to pass if they felt uncomfortable. I was pleased that so many students were excited to read out loud to myself and their peers.

Writing Workshop

The students continued to work on their "I Need My Monster" descriptive writing piece. Once they were finished their writing the students were asked to type it up in a Google Doc and share it with me.

Next week the students will complete the projects by using their descriptions or "elaborate detail" to draw the monster under their bed.

Math

The following curricular outcomes were covered in math this week:
  • use base ten blocks to compare pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers and determine which number is greater.
  • represent numbers on a number line.
  • compare pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers using place value to determine which number is greater.
  • use words and symbols to compare numbers (<, >, =). Students will write the greatest and least possible numbers from given digits.
Mathletics

This week the students were so excited to be introduced to Mathletics. Mathletics is an engaging and targeted online resource to help students with their math curriculum. This resource allows me to assign specific activities to reinforce the lessons I'm teaching in the classroom. The "Live Mathletics" option allows the students to play a 60-second mental math challenge against other students from our class, school or around the world. The students' usernames and passwords are in their agendas so they can use this online resource at home as well.

Science

The students are working very hard to finish up their lap books. They have really enjoyed putting the information about rocks and minerals together in such a fun way. This week we focused on learning about the rock cycle, layers of the earth and we reviewed the different properties of rocks.

Art

We enjoyed the book "A Poppy Is to Remember" so much that it became the inspiration for our art project this week.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Mr. E for being chosen as our student of the week in assembly on Friday!

Your child has created this beautiful Christmas card! We would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase your child's card in sets of 10 for $10 to share with friends and family.
