Ukrainian Village
We had a great start to the week with our trip the the Ukrainian Cultural Village. The students really enjoyed being immersed in the Ukrainian Culture. They said it felt like they were in the "olden times!" Thanks to Kadie's mom for volunteering to join us on the the trip. It was such a great day!
The students spent some time in the Russia school in a "Pioneer Classroom." The teacher welcomed our students into his classroom and provided an immersive 1920's schoolroom experience by doing lessons in history, mathematics and spelling.
In the Ukrainian Orthodox Church the girls sit on the left and the boys sit on the right.
We got to visit an old farmstead.
A farm isn't complete without chickens.......
....and pigs!
The students enjoyed visiting the grocery store. The prices are much lower that what we pay now!
Blacksmith Shop
A little game of Cat and Mouse
Pushing the train down the tracks!
The wagon ride was so fun!
Picnic Lunch
What a long day!
Bus Ride Home!
The next day the students created a "Ukrainian Cultural Village" page for their Memory Albums.
Thank you so much to the our wonderful volunteers who came in on Friday to prepare a Ukrainian lunch for the students. They really enjoyed the perogies, Ukrainian sausage and cabbage rolls.
Language Arts
This week the students continued with their grammar skills by completing a Daily Language Review worksheet.
The students also started writing their next All About Me paragraphs for their memory books.
Math
The students were so excited to start our Division Unit in math. The following curricular objectives were covered:
- Sharing - Knowing the Number of Sets - identify the number of objects in a set given the total number of objects divided into a given number of sets
- Sharing - Knowing How Many in Each Set - determine the number of sets given a number of objects to be divided equally and the number in each set
- Sets - Identify the objects to be divided into sets, the number of sets and the number of objects in each set
- Two Ways of Sharing - Recognize which information is provided and which is absent among: how many sets, how many in each set and how many altogether
Science
Each day the students have the opportunity to write about what they are observing with our butterflies. They are so excited to arrive each morning to see if their are any changes to record.
This week the students have been reading about the Butterfly Life Cycle and answering comprehension questions to confirm their understanding of the material. We have specifically been working on using sentence starters to begin our answers.
Art
In art this week the students started painting their Monarch Butterflies using a technique called Pointillism. This technique involves painting using tiny dots of various colours, which become blended in the viewer's eye.
The students enjoyed making flowers for a special upcoming event.
They also had fun colouring letters to spell THANK YOU." I wonder who we could be thanking?!
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
