We had a great week in 3A. But its hard to believe that September is almost over. Time is flying by!
VIP
Congratulations to our new VIP for the week! We had a great time getting to know our friend better.
This week we continued to work on proper paragraph structure in our writing. The students were asked to write a descriptive paragraph about their pet rocks. They focused on writing proper topic, detail and concluding sentences.
The students used the chrome books to type up their paragraphs. The pet rocks, along with their descriptive paragraphs, are in the hallway outside of our room. Please feel free to come take a look!
PA3-5 Number Patterns Made by Adding or Subtracting
Goals: Students will distinguish between growing and shrinking (increasing and decreasing) number patterns with a constant difference. Students will identify the constant difference or gap and extend these number patterns by adding or subtracting the gap. Students will solve word problems using growing or shrinking number patterns.
PA3-6 Number Patterns and Rules
Goals: Students will identify rules for patterns made by adding or subtracting the same number. Students will extend increasing or decreasing number patterns using rules. Students will use rules to identify mistakes in patterns.
Science
In science the students got to experience the life of a Geologist! The students performed a "Pet Rock Experiment" on the rocks gathered during their rock walk. Given a description of the properties of rocks, the students were to determine the colour, htardness, lustre (shininess), texture and the presence of carbonates of their rocks. Please ask your child to tell you what it means if a rock floats.
PE
Mrs. Forchuk taught us the funnest game called "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Snake" this week in PE.
Grade One Buddies
The students were so excited to meet their Grade One buddies and to have a chance to read with them this week.

Reading Workshop
During reading workshop we continued to focus on analyzing character traits. Using the book "Terry Fox - A Story of Hope" as a mentor text, we discussed the difference between character traits and emotions. I tell my students that a character trait is the way a person acts: it’s a part of their personality and it comes from inside. Emotions are usually fleeting feelings that may be due to an outside force, such as good news. Using this knowledge the students were able to generate many words or "character traits" to describe Terry Fox. Specific traits that the students came up with were: brave, kind, generous, caring, determined and hero.

Terry Fox Walk
Friday, September 29th was our annual Terry Fox Run. I am so happy to announce that our class collected $26.25 to donate to cancer research! Well done 3A! Thank you to the John Maland high school volunteers who came to help out. Also a big thanks to the Devon Lions for your support and generosity.
