November 20 - 24

I can't believe that December is almost here! We are very busy with the holiday season quickly approaching. FYI, the Grade 3 Christmas concert is being held on Monday Dec. 18 with performances at 1:10pm and 6:30pm.

Please remember to send in your Devon Christmas Elves' donations. The last day for donating food items is December 7th. The class with the most items donated will win a root beer float party. Thank you in advance for your support!

Sending a big shout out to Miss L and the three other Grade 3 students for doing a great job of presenting the Devon Christmas Elves food campaign to the school during assembly

Thank you to Miss Potter and a few of her students for teaching us how to use Google Draw to make posters for the Devon Christmas Elves food campaign. The posters are being displayed in the classrooms and throughout the school.

Curriculum Update

Reading Workshop

We read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.
Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in this hair. And it got worse...

Using this story as a mentor text I modeled the comprehension strategy of summarizing and retelling the story. The students used this strategy to summarize Freckle Juice in a comic strip.

Congratulations to the students who flew to their next destination in our Amazing Race this week!

Writing Workshop

The students completed the good copies of their opinion writing piece about which animal would make the best pet - cats or dogs?  We used Art Hub for Kids to guide the students in their illustrations to go along with their writing.

The students also loved having the opportunity to write Chapter 6 of Freckle Juice and sharing them with the class during Author's Chair.

 Word Study

Each week the students write five high frequency Word Wall Words in complete sentences.

Math

We worked on the following goals this week:

Comparing Numbers with Base Ten Models
- use base ten blocks to compare pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers and determine which number is greater.
-represent numbers on a number line.

Comparing Numbers by Place Value
- compare pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers using place value to determine which number is greater. Students will use words and symbols to compare numbers (<, >, =).
- write the greatest and least possible numbers from given digits.

Placing Numbers in Order
- plot numbers on a number line to place them in order.
- arrange a list of numbers in ascending or descending order.
- recognize that a two-digit number is less than any three-digit number.
-identify errors in a sequence of numbers in order.

I also introduced the students to an activity called "How Many Ways." The students are given a number and asked to create as many equations as they can equaling that number. The goal of the “How Many Ways” activity is to encourage students to explore all
the operations in a safe, creative environment. When this happens many students create their own meaning and understanding of numbers and how numbers work together in complex patterns.

The students loved sharing their favourite equation on the smart board.

Science

The students completed their Hearing and Sound Lap Books this week. The last activity involved carefully listening and classifying sounds as loud or soft, high pitched or low pitched as common objects were dropped onto a desk. A decibel meter was used to help with classifying the sounds of the items dropped.

The students enjoyed using the Chromebooks to view different videos about Hearing and Sound on the Engaging Students Website.

Art

This week we began our Tissue Paper Birch Tree art project. Our inspiration for this project comes from the traditional Ojibway Story of the Birch Tree. The students watched a video of the story being told by Ojibway Joe about how the weegwas (birch tree) got it's stripes. Please click on the following link to view the video.

Ojibway Story of the Birch Tree

To start, the students created the landscape out of tissue paper. First they drew a line with would be where the sky meets the snow. Next they glued down the squares of tissue paper, filling the sky with warm or cool colors. Next week the students will use watercolour paper to cut out trees and paint the black lines of the trees.

VIP

Thank you to our student of the week for all of your help in the classroom and for being such a great role model. We enjoyed having your Nana come for a visit to read your special letter.
