February 26 - March 2

We had a very busy week in 3A. But the highlight was most definitely celebrating Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday!

2018 FOCUS: CYBERBULLYING

In today’s digital world, it can be impossible to escape online bullying, whether it takes the shape of harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing information or threats. This year, Pink Shirt Day encouraged others to combat cyberbullying by thinking twice before posting something negative, and instead using the internet to spread kindness - because we know that Nice Needs No Filter!

I also read the book "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies" to the students. Howard was being bullied at school. His intuition told him to let the teacher know. Instead he chose different strategies and they all failed. He finally told the teacher and she took action to make him feel okay and safe. This story brought on a great class discussion about how to deal with bullying at school.

The students enjoyed designed their own "Pink Shirts."

The students also had a lot of fun making friendship bracelets out of rainbow loom and beads.

VIP

It was great learning more about our special VIP this week.

Curriculum Update

Writing Workshop

During writing workshop the students wrote and illustrated their second All About Me paragraphs.

Please continue to respond to our Back and Forth Journal entries. The students love reading your responses!

Reading Workshop

We started reading the Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary.

When the ever-curious Ralph spots Keith's red toy motorcycle, he vows to ride it. So when Keith leaves the bike unattended in his room one day, Ralph makes his move. But with all this freedom (and speed!) come a lot of obstacles. Whether dodging a rowdy terrier or keeping his nosy cousins away from his new wheels, Ralph has a lot going on! And with a pal like Keith always looking out for him, there's nothing this little mouse can't handle.

Math

The students enjoyed playing a bingo game with a partner to practice their "rounding" skills.

They also wrote their quiz on rounding and estimating this week.

I also introduced the students to a game called Prodigy.  I will also include Prodigy usernames and passwords in the front of the students agendas if they would like to play the game at home.  Prodigy allows me to assign any math topic for students to work on, and then I can get a detailed report on their progress!

Later in the week be began Unit 6 Number Sense: Skip Counting and Multiplication. In this unit, the students will gain a conceptual understanding of multiplication of whole numbers, recognize patterns in multiples of numbers, and gain confidence with essential multiplication facts. They will learn about even and odd numbers, and they will add sequences of numbers to model multiplication with repeated addition, skip counting, and objects in equal-sized groups. The students will also learn about the commutative property of multiplication through arrays, solve simple real-world problems showing equal groups or arrays, and pay particular attention to patterns among the multiples.

Science

We completed the next Survivor Building Challenge this week.

Great job building a sturdy table for our shelter! We've been on the island for a few days now. All that we've eaten are some bananas and a few berries. Titus and Rainnan decide that they would like to look for more food, while the others work on a plan to get off the island. They need a way to carry the food back to our shelter. Titus suggests that they make some sort of a backpack. Rainnan finds some tree bark and leaves that they could use to make the bags. We aren't sure which material will work best to hold the food. We will need to test the two materials to determine which one will support more mass.

The testable question is:  Will different stocks of paper support different mass?

Conclusion:  Card stock paper supports more mass than construction paper.

Art

The students finished their Bridge Silhouettes by painting the watercolour backgrounds.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!

and to our BOKS Kid of the Week!
