Friday, September 28th was our annual Terry Fox Run. It was rainy and cold but the students pushed through. We talked about how walking in the chilly, wet weather helped us to better understand what Terry Fox went through his Marathon of Hope.
Reading Workshop
This week I read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.
Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in this hair. And it got worse...
While reading the book, we focused on making personal connections with the text by using their schema (background knowledge). We specifically discussed how Text-to-Self (T-S) connections are made between the text and the reader's personal experience. We discussed how just like the boy in the story, we all have bad days too. When kids make connections between a book and their own lives, they feel empathy for the characters and become invested in the story. They have an easier time remembering the story when they feel a personal connection.
Those Have you ever wanted “those shoes?” Yes, the shoes that everybody else has, but you don’t. I can SO relate to this one as a kid! Most kids can also relate to Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts.

We also focused on analyzing character traits this week. After reading"The Story of Terry Fox" we discussed the difference between character traits and emotions. I explained that a character trait is the way a person acts: it’s a part of their personality and it comes from inside. Emotions are usually feelings that occur due to something else happening, such as good news. Using this knowledge the students were able to generate many words or "character traits" to describe Terry Fox. Specific traits that the students came up with were: brave, kind, generous, caring, determined and hero.

Follow reading this story as a class, the students were given a six question comprehension quiz. There were also given a sentence scramble quiz to assess their ability to put complete sentences together. Both of these quizzes are now posted on PowerSchool.
I am so happy to announce that our class collected $44.00 to donate to cancer research! Well done 3A! Thank you to the Riverview Middle School and John Maland high school volunteers who came to help out. Also a big thanks to the Devon Lions for your support and generosity.
Writing Workshop
During journal writing the students were asked to respond to the prompt "What Makes a Good Student?"
This week we focused on proper sentence structure that includes:
- A sentence includes a NAMING and a TELLING part.
- Naming part - WHO or WHAT the sentence is about.
- Telling part - the ACTION or WHAT IS HAPPENING in the sentence.
- Must have a capital to begin the sentence and a proper end mark (. ? !)
The students worked through activities where they had to identify the naming and telling parts of sentences.
Math
This week we covered the following in math:
Lesson 6 - Number Patterns and Rules
Goals:
- identify rules for patterns made by adding or subtracting the same number.
- extend increasing or decreasing number patterns using rules.
- use rules to identify mistakes in patterns.
After completing lesson 6 the students were assessed on their knowledge of lessons 5 & 6.
The students were given an opportunity to to use their Mathletics accounts during class this week. Their usernames and passwords were put in your child's agenda if they would like to log onto the website at home.
Science
In science the students got to experience the life of a Geologist! The students performed a "Pet Rock Experiment" on the two rocks brought from home. Given a description of the properties of rocks, the students were to determine the colour, htardness, lustre (shininess), texture and the presence of carbonates of their rocks.
Art
The students finished their "I Am" poetry art. It is on display in our hallway if you'd like to take a look.
