January 21 - 25

The end of January is nearing. I am keeping busy with assessments and writing report cards. The students are working hard and having some fun too. The students had a great week of skating and especially enjoyed India Day.

Star Student

We had a great week celebrating our Star Student this week.

Love our parent visits!

Curriculum Update

Reading Workshop

I read the book "The Little Penguin" by A.J. Wood this week. It's a cute story about a fluffy and furry baby Emperor penguin. He doesn't understand why he doesn't look like his father, but with some reassuring words from his mother and a little bit of time, the feathers fall off and he soon transforms into the magnificent creature he always wanted to be.

Using this story as a mentor text I modeled the comprehension strategy of summarizing and retelling the story. The students were then asked to fill in a summarizing graphic organizer using the "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" strategy.

Writing Workshop

The students completed their google slides and presented their penguin reports this week. They all did such a great job.

Math

This week our focus was on problem solving. The students practiced applying their reading comprehension strategies to one and two step addition/subtraction problems.

Science

We began our Survivor Building Challenge as part of our "Testing Materials" and "Building with a Variety of Materials" units in science.  On the way to Tunisia our flight had to make an emergency landing on a deserted island. Our class will participate in a variety of building challenges while trying to "survive" on the island.  The students have been placed in tribes and will work together through the various challenges.

Here are our tribes:

The students made a title page for "Survivor Building Challenge" booklet.

We began the unit by participating in an activity that taught us about a "fair test."  The students need to be aware of what makes a test fair and the necessary components that are included in a fair test.

A fair test is where the factors (variables) are controlled in order to keep testing the same (constant). If changes are made it can only be one thing that changes. This is an important concept moving forward as we participate in various challenges to test materials.
Skating

We had a fantastic week of skating. I would like to send out a big thank you to the parent volunteers who came each day to tie skates and for going on the ice with the kids. Your help was so greatly appreciated! Also, thank you to Miss Janae for planning such a fun week of skating activities for the students.

India Day

We read the book "Hannah the Henna Helper" by Klaire Pearson prior to our India Culture Day. The book showed different types of henna tattoos from India and the Middle East. The students also learned how to draw traditional patterns so they can create their own henna designs on paper.

On Friday the Grade 3 students enjoyed the day being immersed in the India culture. The students rotated between the three classes participating in various activities to celebrate India. In our room the students enjoyed traditional Indian food and played a game called Mancala.

The students made Diwali lanterns in Mrs. Forchuk and Mrs. Tewitz's class.

In Mrs. Milson's room the students had the opportunity to practices their own henna designs and have henna tattoo art done on their hands.

Each of the students also got to take home a peacock feather. The peacock is the national bird of India.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week
