It was a short week with Teacher's Convention, but we still got a lot accomplished in 3A!
Please take a read through our curricular update for the week:
Writing Workshop
This week the students completed their "Life in a Snow Globe" writing. The focus of the writing was to use vivid verbs and varying our sentence starters. The students used the chrome books to insert a snow globe template. They were then asked to draw their illustrations to go along with their writing.
Friendship Mini Unit
With Valentine's Day coming up, it's the perfect time to celebrate friendship!
I read the book "Don't Need Friends" by Carolyn Crimi. In the story Rat gives up on friendship after his best friend Possum moves away. Although the other animals try to be nice to him, he's rude to everyone. Dog and Rat begin a daily routine of grumbling to each other, until a cold winter day arrives that ultimately brings them together.
After reading the story, we discussed how the characters of Dog and Rat changed their minds about having friends throughout the story. As a class we created an anchor chart on "How to be a True Friend."
The next day I introduce a patterned poem by Jessica Crum entitled: Friends. I use the technique of "Guess the Covered Word" to get the students to practice using context clues when reading. We glued the poem into their "Friendship Poem Folders" and practiced reading it multiple times. We will be borrowing Jessica Crum's pattern to write our own "Friend" poems next week.
Reading Workshop
This week I introduced the reading strategy of "Making Inferences" by reading the story Love Splat by Rob Scotton.
Inferring is very similar to predicting. Inferring is kind of like the big umbrella and predicting fits neatly under it. But what’s the difference between them?
Predicting is when you use your background knowledge and clues the author gives you to make an “educated” guess. A prediction can usually be confirmed or denied through further reading. Making inferences also requires your background knowledge and clues the author gives you to make a guess, but inferences are not clearly confirmed or denied through reading.
In the story Splat Love the author keeps the reader guessing or "making inferences" about how the characters were feeling. The students recorded their inferences on a "heart" graphic organizer.
Math
In math this week we covered the following outcomes:
-skip counting by 3s and identifying patterns in skip counting
- identify the number skip counted by and fill in numbers in sequences of skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s.
- identify mistakes in sequences of skip counting forwards by 3s.
- learn the term “multiples” as numbers obtained by skip counting forwards starting at zero.
Science
Challenge 4: Thanks to your great work, our sleeping area is off the ground and safe from the rain! Now we all can get some much needed rest and go to sleep. Serenity and Jack wake up before the rest of us and surprise us with breakfast. They have picked some ripe berries that they found growing nearby. We soon realize that we don't have a proper table to eat on. Parker, Myla, Sierra and Lucas go in search of materials to build a table. Luckily they discover some useful things from the plane. Parker brings back a rectangular piece of metal for the table top. The others bring back different materials that could be used as the centre pillar to support the table top. Myla returns with part of the jet engine, which is a cylinder shape. Sierra finds a triangular pillar which was part of the plane's rudder. Lucas brings back a rectangular crate that must been part of the plane's cargo. We can't decide who's pillar we should use for our table. The table should be strong enough to support our food or anything that we put on it. We need to decide which shape of pillar use. Which will hold more mass - a cylinderical, rectangular or and triangular shaped pillar?
Testable Question: Which shape of pillar is the most stable?
Conclusion: The cylindrical pillar is the strongest because it does not have any corners and the weight is distributed evenly.
Art
In art we made a "Heart Fingerprint Tree." They turned out so cute!
Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate with us to have our winter walk on Wednesday. But we didn't let that stop us. Thank you to Mrs. Tewitz for leading the students through the hallways of RBES on an "indoor" winter walk.
Thank you to our friend for bringing snacks to celebrate his birthday! Yum!
Have a great weekend everyone!
