Thank you to Mr. E for sharing a special book he published called Remember Us with the class. He is becoming an excellent author and illustrator. Great job!
Language Arts: This week during Writer's Workshop we learned about Diamante Poems. A diamante is an unrhymed seven-line poem that is named for its diamond shape. There are 2 types of diamantes; synonym and antonym. Our class wrote antomym diamantes for Remembrance Day. In an antonym diamante, the two nouns at the beginning and end are two words that mean the opposite. The poems followed the following rules:
Noun
Adjective, Adjective
Verb, Verb, Verb

Here is one sample of the wonderful poems written by the students:
Math: Here the students are playing a game of "salute." Salute is a great mental math card game to reinforce addition and subtraction facts.
During Math Workshop we continued to work on comparing and ordering 3-digit numbers using place value. Our hands-on activity involved the students creating 3-digit numbers using spinners and then ordering their numbers according to their place value. Some of our students challenged themselves by comparing and ordering 4-digit numbers!
Science: This week in science, we spent some time analyzing soil layers. We took two different samples of soil and put them into jars. Sample 1 contained soil taken from a backyard. Sample 2 consisted of humus, clay, sand, peat moss and regular sand. We filled the two jars with water and covered with a lid. Then we shook the samples and left them overnight. Our class compared these two samples and recorded our observations. The students discovered that the biggest, heaviest particles weigh more and therefore sink faster.
Social Studies: This week the students coloured the flag of India and discussed what the symbol and represent. The National flag of India is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra. The deep saffron represents courage and sacrifice, the white represents peace and truth and the green represents faith and chivalry. The Chakra signifies the spreading of spiritual blessings and well being.
Phys Ed: The students were so happy to have another yoga class with Dawn this week. They are becoming much more flexible and able to relax.
Music: The students are working very hard in music class preparing for the Christmas Concert. The "Hot Christmas - Cool Christmas" Concert for our class will be on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7pm. Mrs. Stanski has asked that all parents confirm if their child will be in attendance.
Happy Birthday to Mr. E! Thank you for brining in the fabulous "Greg" cupcakes to share with the class. They were so yummy!
