Congratulations to our VIP this week! Mr. J did a great job of helping out with the many jobs in the classroom. The students really enjoyed having our VIP read from one of his favourite Geronimo Stilton books.
The grade three students at Robina Baker had the privilege of receiving a visit from Nicole Brook, a local children's book author. Nicole has recently launched a children's book series called "The Amazing Adventures of Abigail Andrews." The students were lucky enough to be given a signed copy of one of her books to take home.
As part of her presentation, Nicole spoke to the students about how in order to achieve your dreams you need to: Dream It, Believe It and Work At It! Nicole will be releasing a new book in September and she is looking for a new main character. The students have been asked to write their own adventure story at home and bring them to school in January. The lucky winner of the story writing contest will be the main character in Nicole Brook's next book!
Writer's Workshop
This week during Writer's Workshop, the students wrote their letters to Santa. We focused on learning the proper format of writing a friendly letter. The students are anxiously waiting for their responses from Santa.
Words Their Way
On Wednesdays the students use their Words Their Way time to sort with a buddy. During "Buddy Sort" the students choose a partner within their Words Their Way group with to sort. The students take turns reading a word aloud, spelling it and placing the word in the correct category.

Read to Someone
The students were so excited to be given the opportunity to read to a buddy this week during Daily 5. The students sat "EEKK" and practiced the strategy "I Read, You Read."
Math
In math this week we finished our Numbers to 1000 unit by focusing on Estimating to 1000 and discussing How Much is 1000? Early next week we will review the unit and the students will write their unit test on Thursday.

The students really enjoyed having Dawn back this week to teach us some more about yoga.
Social Studies
In social studies we looked at how leaders are chosen and how decisions are made in India compared to Canada.
Grade One Buddies
The students had so much fun making gingerbread houses with their grade one buddies this week. Thank you to the parents for supplying the candies. Also a big thank you to Mrs. Galloway and Mrs. Spottiswood for volunteering to help us out!
The gingerbread houses will be on display until the students bring them home on the last day of school before Christmas holidays.
