Update for week of January 12th

The students at RBES were so lucky to participate in "Drumfit" this week!  Drumfit is a fitness based drumming program that combines the mental health benefits of drumming with the overall health benefits of physical fitness.  The best part.......it was SO MUCH FUN! Take a look at 3R rocking it out to Queen!

On Wednesday we flashed back to the 80's!  It was TOTALLY awesome!

The students even got to make some friendship bracelets.  How's that for a flashback?

One of our friends returned from a trip to Cuba.  He brought in his travel journal to read to the the class, as well as a Cuban hat, a camera made from cans and an Assassin's Creed Treasure Map!  A big thank you to Mr. E for the bracelets that you brought back for each of your friends!  What a lucky group of kids!

Congratulations to Miss A for being chosen as the Star of the Week. She is a kind and caring student who takes great pride in her work.  Congratulations!

Weekly Curriculum Update

Language Arts - The students were so excited to begin handwriting this week.  We started by focusing on the lower case "a," also known as a "clock climber" letter.  We practiced forming the letter in the air with our pointer fingers first before writing them in our notebook.
In writer's workshop this week, we focused on the proper use of quotation marks.  The students practiced creating the 3 types of dialogue sentences - speech that tells, asks and is scary or exciting.
This week I started reading the the Miss Smith's Adventure Series to the students.  Using Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook as a mentor text, I modelled the comprehension strategy of making a mental picture or image.

Math - This week we continued to focus on our Addition and Subtraction unit.  The students have been discovering how addition is related to subtraction by focusing on fact families.  We used various strategies such guess and check, mental math, and the number line to solve for missing numbers in an equation such as 6 + _____ = 13
We also continue to work on mental math strategies daily.  This week our focus was the subtraction strategy of counting back.  When you subtracting 2 numbers that a very close together, you just need to start on the smallest number and count up until you get to the larger number.  For example when calculating 16 - 14 = 2 in your head you would start on 14 and count up saying 15, 16.  The answer is 2 because you counted up 2 numbers to get to 16.

Social Studies - The students did a wonderful job demonstrating their knowledge of India on their "Show What You Know" poster.  Next week we will begin our study of Tunisia.

Science - We continued our study of Hearing and Sound this week.  We had the opportunity to use musical instruments to identify examples of vibration and recognize that sound is a result of vibration.  The students discovered that the larger the vibration, the louder the sound.

We also started working through 7 Hearing and Sound Centers.  The students are recognizing that pitch is the result of differences in the rate of vibration.  They also had the opportunity to demonstrate a variety of ways to producing a sound.  The class is so excited to build their instruments and bring them in next Tuesday, January 20th.  Please remember that their "sound-producing devices should demonstrate methods for controlling the loudness, pitch and quality of sound.
