Congratulations to Mr. T for being chosen as our VIP! We enjoyed learning more about you this week!
Language Arts
This week we continued reading a few more books from the Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook Adventures. Using Miss Smith and the Haunted Library as a mentor text I modelled how to increase comprehension by identifying literary elements such as character, setting, problem and solution. We use these elements to help us infer what will happen next. As readers, we store information to help us remember and comprehend what the story is about. We learn literacy elements separately, but we combine them when reading to give us a better understanding of a story.
Our writing focus this week was to work on making our writing more interesting by varying our sentence structure. The students loved writing different sentences starters and couldn't wait to share them with the class.
Math
In math we focused on using estimation strategies to predict sums. We discussed that when you don't need exact numbers you can estimate. When you estimate a sum, you predict a number that is close to the number you would get by adding.
For example 27 + 28 = _____ can be estimated by rounding to the nearest ten and then adding the estimated numbers together. Therefore, the estimated sum would be 30 + 30 = 60.
Here the students are working together to estimate the sum of 2 numbers.
Science
The students did an amazing job of designing and creating their musical instruments. They loved presenting to the class and demonstrating how to change the volume and pitch on their instruments.
A little bit of "Capture the Flag" to finish the week off!
Art
On Friday we started our Multi Media Winter Birch Tree art project. We began by reading Robert Frost's poem "Into the Woods" to inspire us. Stay tuned for the finished product!
Energize Oil Country
This week our "active at school" challenge was to send a video to the Edmonton Oilers of our class participating in a new activity. We choreographed a DrumFit routine to Cotton Eyed Joe during PE. Fingers crossed that they choose our video as the winner this week. Click on the link below to view our video.
Miss K enjoyed cashing in some of her DOJO points to bring in a stuffy for the day!
Congratulations to Mr. E for being chosen as our Star Student at assembly this week!
