It was a CRAZY week!

This week we celebrated "Crazy" day.  The students had a great time dressing up in their craziest outfits.  Luckily they weren't too crazy during class!

Language Arts

I Wish My Teacher Knew........

I can't take credit for the idea for our Monday morning journal writing topic.  A teacher in Denver uses the writing prompt "I Wish My Teacher Knew" every year with her grade 3 students.  This idea came from teachers discussing how best to reach their students needs, on all levels.   I loved this idea and wanted to try in my own classroom.  On Monday I asked the students to share something about themselves that I don't know.  I told them that they didn't have to write anything that they felt was too personal.  Many students honestly felt like I already knew everything that there was to know about them.  I am so thankful for this idea and feel like I have a greater understanding of my students after this writing assignment.

Read Aloud

This week I started reading the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio during our Read Aloud time.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting grade 5, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, and others. These perspectives convey individual's struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.  Each day as I read Wonder to the students, we will continue to focus on reading strategies and vocabulary specific to the book.

Diary of An Animal Writing Project

The students have completed their animal research for their Diary of an Animal project.  They were asked to pretend that their animal can keep a diary, like the worm in Diary of the Worm. This week we began planning and writing a diary for the animal they have researched.  The students were asked to use their humour to write about their animal research.  Each diary entry should include one real fact about the animal they are writing a diary about.  The students are doing a great job so far!

 Math

This week we continued to work on Multiplication to 5x5.  The focus was to identify related multiplication sentences with the same product.  The students learned that you can multiply numbers in any order.  They also discovered that when you know one multiplication fact, you can switch the order of the number to get a second multiplication fact.

For example, when you use an array with 4 rows of 5 (4 x 5 = 20) you can turn the array on its side.  The new fact you have now is 5 rows of 4 (5 x 4 = 20).

Here the students are playing a multiplication game using dice.

We also began working on Division this week by looking at division as grouping.  The students learned that grouping can be used to divide.  Grouping is used to solve problems when the total number of objects and the number of objects in each group are known.

Social Studies

The students have completed their research on Ukraine and are ready to start their travel brochures next week.

Science
The Building Things Unit home project assignment came home on Thursday.  The students are required to building a bridge, using their knowledge from our testing materials unit in science.  The bridge project is following our "Survivor" theme and is intended to finally get us off the island.  Here's hoping the bridges will support us!

Art

This week in art we used watercolours to paint our Stacked Little Birdies.  Three very simple birds are stacked on each other, with the highest one looking at a pretty flower.  The students had a great time with this project!  The paintings turned out so well!
