Congratulations to Miss K for being chosen as our VIP this week! We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better. The class especially liked it when you brought in your brother as one of your "special" show and share items. Very cute!
Language Arts
During our read aloud time this week, I continued to use "Wonder" as a mentor text. We focused on using our comprehension strategies to make connections to the book. Students make personal
connections with the text by using their schema (background knowledge). We specifically discussed how Text-to-Self (T-S) connections are made between the text and the reader's personal experience. I used the following journal prompt on Monday to have the students make T-S connections with the book Wonder:
Have you ever
felt different?
Describe a time when you
felt different. How did people treat
you? Describe your feelings. Were they good or bad?
I enjoyed reading the student's journal entries and hearing how they were able to relate in some way to what our main character in Wonder may be feeling.
During Writer's Workshop, the students continued to work on their Diary of an Animal entires. The students completed a few of the following prompts:
- Today was show and tell so I brought.......
- Why I would make a great superhero........
- Three things that I scare......
- Three things that scare me......
The students are still really enjoying their handwriting practice.
Math
This week in math we focused on Division as Sharing. Sharing can be used to divide. It can be used to solve problems when the total number of objects and the number of groups are known.
The students also practiced their division facts by playing the game "Race the the Moon." The first person to make a line from Earth to the Moon by answering the division facts correctly is the winner.
Science
The students' bridge assignment was due on Friday. They did such a great job building their bridges. Our VIP presented her bridge to the class and we will continue with the rest of the students next week.
Social Studies
The students are just finishing up the good copies of their Ukraine Travel Brochure. Using their jot notes, they created a brochure to entice travellers to want to visit the Ukraine.
Art
Next week we will be celebrating Education Week. The theme this year is "We Are Teachers." Each class has been asked to create portraits of their teachers and display them outside their classrooms. The students did an amazing job drawing and colouring their "dot" portraits!
Student of the Week
Congratulations to Mr. E for being chosen as our Student of the Week during assembly on Friday!
