Education Week

As part of Education Week, the students at RBES had the opportunity to participate in peer teaching activities on Monday afternoon.  Each class had 3-4 student teachers hosting educational sessions for the rest of the school.  In our class, our peer teachers did an amazing job teaching about the Butterfly Life Cycle and doing a craftivity with the students.

So proud of our Peer Teachers from 3R!

Thank you so much to the Devon Lion's Club members for coming to our school on Tuesday to read to the students.  We really enjoyed having a member read "No Clean Clothes" by Robert Munsch book to our class.  The Lion's Club also gave us a novel to add to our classroom library!

Hats On for Mental Health

On May 6, 2015,  the students were invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.

Language Arts

During our Writier's Workshop this week the students finished the "sloppy copies" of their Diary of An Animal writing project.  Next week the students will be typing up their diary entries on the chrome books using the program "Storyboard That."

During our read aloud time we continued to focus on our reading strategies using "Wonder" as a mentor text.  We specifically worked on Expanding Vocabulary by tuning into interesting words.  Students who tune in to interesting words expand their vocabulary by focusing on these new words and their meaning. By looking for words that are interesting and unique, children not only increase their vocabulary, but they also enhance their comprehension. A child must have multiple exposures to a word in order for it to become a part of his/her vocabulary.

How can you help your child with this strategy at home?
1. When your child is reading or you are reading to your child, ask your child to find three interesting words. Have your child write these words down and talk about the meaning of these words. See if anyone in your family is able to use the words in a sentence. Add these words to your family word collector.
2. Encourage your child to find interesting words when watching TV or in daily conversation. When tuning in to an interesting word, help your child understand the word and then add it to the family word collector.
3. As always, modeling is a wonderful way to spark interest in children. When you are reading a magazine, newspaper, or book, tune into an interesting word and discuss it with your child. Explain that even adult readers tune into interesting words to better understand text.

Math

This week in math we looked at relating multiplication and division using arrays and grouping.  The students learned that for most multiplication sentences, there are 2 related division sentences and 1 related multiplication sentence.  For most division sentences, there are 2 related multiplication sentences and 1 related division sentence.

We also discussed how equal groups can be used to model multiplication and division.  Every multiplication sentences has at least one related division sentence.

Science

The students did an amazing job of presenting their bridges to the class.  They were so excited to use their bridges to get off the island!  I'm proud to report that everyone made it to safety!  Great work!

Congratulations to Miss A for being our VIP this week.  We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better.  The class especially liked hearing about your dream to own 1,000 cats someday.  WOW!

The students have been working very hard this week to surprise their moms for Mother's Day.  They are so excited to give you their gifts on Sunday.
