Weekly Update June 1 - 5th

Language Arts

This was our last week of Words Their Way spelling for the year.  It's such pleasure to see the progression the students have made in their spelling this year.  I am so proud of each and everyone one of my students.

During writer's workshop the students were asked to think about what it would be like to transform from a caterpillar into a butterfly.  The students wrote journal entries about what they would do and how they would feel on their first day as a butterfly.  Here are some of their writing samples.

Math

In math this week we continued working on our measurement unit.  The outcomes covered included:

Demonstrate an understanding of measuring length (cm, m) by:
• selecting and justifying referents for the units cm and m
• modelling and describing the relationship between the units cm and m
• estimating length, using referents • measuring and recording length, width and height

Demonstrate an understanding of perimeter of regular and irregular shapes by:
• estimating perimeter, using referents for cm or m
• measuring and recording perimeter (cm, m)
• constructing different shapes for a given perimeter (cm, m) to demonstrate that many shapes are possible for a perimeter

Yoga

The students enjoyed their last yoga class with Dawn.  They are really learning how to relax, as you can see in these pictures!

Science

The students were so excited to see a few of our caterpillars starting to form chrysalises.  The transformation is truly amazing.

The students are beginning to illustrated their Diary Entries.  Here is are a few samples of the entries typed up in Story Board.

Art

In art this week the students started painting their Monarch Butterflies using a technique called Pointillism.  This technique involves painting using tiny dots of various colours, which become blended in the viewer's eye.  Thank you to 3FT for the great project idea!

While a few of our students were away at the track meet on Thursday, some friends from 3FM joined us for the day.

Congratulations to Mr. J for being chosen as our Student of the Week during assembly this week.
