Writing Workshop
The important thing about Mrs. Becker is that ______________________________ _________________________________.
Many students chose to write about Mrs. Becker's wonderful ability to bring books to life.
Reading Workshop
During Reading Workshop this week we focused on Accuracy Strategies. When helping children to improve their reading, it's important to focus on decoding words efficiently and accurately. This allows students to direct their attention on understanding what they are reading. One way to help students with their accuracy is to watch for familiar patterns called chunks. When reading with your child at home, have your child look for well-know letter chunks in the words they are reading. For example, your child may look for the chunk end in the word send or air in chair. When chunking a word, have your child first read each chunk separately. Then have your child put the chunks together to make the word. Encourage your child to use his/her fingers to frame the chunks found in words, decode those chunks first, and then move on to read the whole word.
Thank you to Miss M for sharing during our Reading Response time this week.
Three more students were so excited to fly to India this week! Way to go!
Math
Prior to finishing our Patterning Unit this week, we focused on problem solving using increasing and decreasing number patterns. The students also wrote their Patterning Unit Test on Wednesday and they all did so well! You will have a chance to look at their unit tests during our parent meetings on November 4th.
Science
During science this week we continued to work through our Rocks and Minerals Lapbook. We will be finishing this unit by the end of next week.
Social Studies
This week our focus was on learning about the 7 continents and the 4 oceans on earth. As well, the students used the chrome books to fill in their map of Canada by identifying all of the provinces and territories.
The mapping assignment was due this week. The students did an amazing job of their maps and coming up with 3 questions that could be answered using their maps as a reference.
Scream Blow Painting
This week our art project was inspired by the book "Monster Mama" written by Liz Rosenberg. The students began their "Monster Mama" portraits by drawing and colouring the screaming faces. Next week the students finish their art work by blow painting in the hair. The "Scream Blow Paintings" will be on display in our hallway in time for Halloween.
Steadfast Tin Soldier Field Trip
On Thursday our class had the opportunity to attend "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" presented by the Alberta Opera. This presentation took us on a journey into the world of toys! When a unique Tin Soldier becomes captivated by a paper Ballerina. The Tin Soldier is then forced into a series of incredible adventures that change his life forever.
Thank you to Mrs. Mackay for volunteering to join us on our field trip!
Bully Free Zone
For the month of October the focus during Friday assemblies has been Anti-Bullying and Respect. Our class, along with 3B, sang a rap song called "Bully Free Zone" to model what "Bullying" and "Respect" might look like in our school. The students looked and sounded awesome!
Congratulations to Mr. R for being chosen as our Student of the Week during assembly this week. Keep up the great work!
Thank you to our Student of the Week for bringing in sugar beets to show the class as well!
