October 26th - 30th

Here are some of the curricular highlights this week in 3D:

Writer's Workshop

This week our focus was on using Elaborative Detail in our writing.  First I read the story I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll to get us thinking about how to make our writing more interesting by including details.  While most of the great description of the monsters occurs through the pictures in this book, there are fabulous describing words and phrases woven throughout this story about imaginary monsters.  We discussed how vivid word choice and specific detail not only make for an interesting paragraph, but become powerful tools for building vocabulary.  The students then wrote an elaborative piece about their own imaginary monster. They will be sharing their writing during parent teacher conferences.

Reading Workshop

The students were  excited to be given the opportunity to read to a buddy this week during our Reading Workshop.  The students sat "EEKK" and practiced the strategy "I Read, You Read."

Home Reading

Congratulations to the students who reached our 500 & 1000 minute milestones this week!

Math

This week we started our Number Sense unit in Math.  The following goals were covered:

  • identify the place value of digits in 2- and 3-digit numbers.
  • understand the value of digit in 2- and 3-digit numbers.
  • read and write number words to twenty and multiples of ten up to ninety.
  • read and write number words up to nine hundred ninety nine.
The students were given Place Value Cards and were asked to identify the place value of certain digits that were underlined on the board.  For example, if I wrote the number 989 with the nine underlined, the students would hold up the Hundreds Place Value card.

We also continued to work on our mental math by focusing on the "plus 10" strategy.  The students enjoyed playing "Plus 10 Climb to the Top" to help recall their basic facts when adding 10 to any number.

Art

The students finished their Scream Blow Paintings.  They are on display just outside our classroom. Be sure to take a look next week during parent teacher conferences.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

The students had a great day of Halloween festivities.  They all looked amazing in their costumes.

After the parade in the gym, we came back to the classroom for our SPOOKTACULAR Halloween party!  The students had a lot of fun rotating through the different stations.

A big THANKS to our friends Carter, Chase, Colton, Gage, Jack and Kiera for supplying food and treats for the Halloween party!  The students really appreciated it!

On Friday afternoon we enjoyed a drumming presentation by Mr. Lyle Tribe.  A few of our friends were invited to participate!

Happy Birthday to Miss V who celebrated her birthday this week!

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!
