November 2nd - 6th

VIP

Congratulations to Mr. T for being chosen as our VIP this week.  We enjoyed learning more about you and the students especially liked your current event presentation on Connor McDavid.  Great job this week!

Reading Workshop

This week I read a book called "Why We Remember." It is written and illustrated by students from Graysville School in Graysville, Manitoba. This is a wonderful book explaining the importance of celebrating Remembrance Day, written from the perspective of Grade One students in Canada.

Thank you to Mr. G for sharing during our Reading Response time.

Writing Workshop

Here are some of the students' "I Need My Monster" writing projects completed.

This week during Writing Workshop we learned about Diamante Poems.  A diamante is an unrhymed seven-line poem that is named for its diamond shape.  There are 2 types of diamantes; synonym and antonym.  Our class wrote synonym diamantes for Remembrance Day about what "peace" means to them.  In an synonym diamante, the two nouns at the beginning and end are two words have similar meanings. The poems followed the following rules:

Noun
Adjective, Adjective
Verb, Verb, Verb
Noun, Noun, Noun, Noun
Verb, Verb, Verb
Adjective, Adjective
Noun

Math

Curricular Goals

  • Practice representing numbers with base ten materials
  • Replace a number with its expanded numeral form and vice versa
  • Use base ten materials to determine which is larger
Here the students are playing a game of "soldier salute."  Salute is a great mental math card game to reinforce addition and subtraction facts.

Science

We are close to finishing up our Rocks and Minerals Unit.  The students spent some time quizzing each other and preparing for the unit text next Tuesday.

This week we also focused on recognizing and describing the various components within 5 different samples of soil: clay, sand, oil sand, garden soil and peat moss.  The students are learning that soil isn't just dirt.  It is a combination of fine rock particles and humus (decayed/rotted plant and animal matter).

Social Studies

In social studies, we are preparing for our trip to India.  The students had a great time filling in and colouring their Canadian passports.  Now we just have to discuss what to pack in our suitcases!

Art

This week we created "Mixed Media Poppies" in art to go along with our diamante poems.

Congratulations to Miss S for finding a golden ticket under her chair and winning a $25 certificate for the book fair.

Student of the Week

I can't think of a more deserving Student of the Week than Mr. T.
He is a very kind and considerate classmate, who always works to the best of his abilities. Keep up the excellent work!
