It was such a great week in 3D! We are really getting into the Christmas spirit. On Tuesday afternoon/evening the grade 3/4 classes performed their Christmas concert. The students looked great and they did a wonderful job of singing "I Can Hear the Elves!"
Devon Christmas Elves
On Friday the 3B and 3D classes delivered the food donations to the Devon Christmas Elves depot. Thanks to the generous donations of many RBES families, we were able to collect approximately 700 food items. The students really enjoyed walking over to the depot and sorting the food into the appropriate categories. They felt proud to be able to contribute to our community in this way. Taking part in this charity helped the students to realize how blessed we are to be grateful for what we have.
Curriculum Update
Reading Workshop
During reading workshop this week I read the story "Thunder Cake" by Patricia Polacco to teach the students how to check for understanding while they read. This story is about a Grandma who consoles her frightened granddaughter by telling her that the dark clouds of the impending storm are nothing more than the ingredients for a Thunder Cake.
"Check for Understanding" is a comprehension strategy that teaches children to stop frequently and check, or monitor, whether they understand what they are reading. This typically is a quick summary of what they’ve read, starting with “who” and “what.” Knowing when we read that we must think about the story and realize what the author is trying to tell us or what we are learning from the book. Readers stop frequently to check for understanding or to ask who and what.
We had more students flying around the world this week as part of your home reading program!
Writer's Workshop
Last week I read "Snow Globe Family" by Jane O'Connor to the students. This is a wonderful story about a little family who lives in a snow globe. They long for a swirling snowstorm—if only someone in the big family would pick up the snow globe and give it a great big shake.
This book inspired our cute writing project about "Life in a Snow Globe." The focus for this activity was to continue to add elaborative detail in our writing.

We combined our paragraphs with this cute "snow globe" art project.
We continued to work on "Kite String" letters this week during handwriting practice.
Math
This week in math the students worked on adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Science
In science, we learned about how our voices work. I asked the students to put their fingers on their throat. They were able to feel a bump that moved when they swallowed. The students were asked to make different sounds and feel their throats at the same time. We discussed that the bump is called the voice box, or larynx. Inside the larynx there are two thin bands called vocal cords. When air is pushed past the vocal cords, they vibrate and make sounds.

Social Studies
We continued to work our Travel Journal this week, focusing on services in India.
I also read a book called "Lights for Gita" by Rachna Gilmore. This story is about a girl named Gita. Gita’s family has recently emigrated from India, but she has already made friends in her new home. Today, she is looking forward to her favourite holiday – Divali, a festival of lights. But Gita’s plans soon fall apart and she becomes homesick.
