Drum roll please.......our VIP this week was Mr. Q!
The class thoroughly enjoyed having "part of" your fossil collection in the classroom for the week. Great job on your current events presentation about Wolverines! Thanks to Mrs. H for coming in to share some special things about our VIP.
Student Led Conferences
Thank you to all of the families who took the time to come in for Student Led Conferences this week. The students did a great job of leading their parents through the various centres to demonstrated their learning.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
A little Leprechaun visited our classroom on the morning of St. Patrick's Day. He played some very mischievous tricks on us. The student's shoes were missing and the Leprechaun left our room a mess!
The leprechaun also left the class a note, sending us on a hunt for a pot of the gold. We teamed up with 3B to find the treasure at the end of the rainbow!
Language Arts
Today we read "Leprechaun on the Loose" by Marcia Thornton Jones for our read aloud. This a tale about a little Leprechaun who causes trouble for a class party and a little boy who is trying desperately to catch the trouble-maker. Finally, the little boy builds a leprechaun trap, but will it work? The reading strategy that we focused on during the read aloud was comprehension. By summarizing text and sequencing the main events of a story, readers are able to improve their comprehension.
The students worked so hard during Writer's Workshop this week. They completed their Irish Limerick's and we put them on display in the hallway for Student Led Conferences.
The students enjoyed doing a "following instructions" activity where they had to colour the leprechaun according to how they answered the questions.
Math
In math we continued to focus on money. We covered the following goals:
- count any combination of pennies, nickels and dimes (two coin types) up to a dollar
- identify 25 cents in any combination of coins
- count any combination of coins up to a dollar
- identify how many coins of any particular denomination would need to be added to an amount to make a certain total
- make specific amounts of money using the least number of coins
Science
This week the students were given their next challenge:
Survivor Challenge: Great job building the backpacks out of tree bark! While searching for food, Colton came across a source of fresh drinking water. Gage and Tristen decided to head back to the plane to find containers to store the fresh water in. However, the fresh water supply is limited , so we need to test the bottles to determine which will be the best to store our water safely. The shape of the container will affect its stability.
Testable Question: Will all shapes of containers be equally stable?
Using four different shapes and sizes of containers, the students tested which would be the most stable. The students discovered that the size of the base affects the stability of the container. As well the taller the container is the wider the base needs to be for stability.
Social Studies
On Friday the students had a wonderful time being immersed in the Tunisia culture!
They enjoyed weaving bookmarks using straws and yarn.
The students played an African board game called "Mancala" using marbles and egg cartons.
They loved creating "mosaic" art pieces out of different types/colours of beans and lentils.
A celebration wouldn't be complete without food. We sampled couscous, dates, flatbread with olive oil and baklava!
The students also had the opportunity to trade their African animal cards.
Art
The students painted "African Zebras" using tempera paint and watercolour for the horizon. They are on display outside of our classroom for you to enjoy.
