March 7th - 11th

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Mr. R for being such a great VIP this week.  We really enjoyed the visit from your parents and getting to know you a bit better!

Language Arts

The students worked so hard during Writer's Workshop this week.  For St. Patrick's Day, we wrote Irish Limericks.

Limericks are short and witty poems.
•It is often believed that the limerick was invented in the 1700’s by soldiers returning from France to the Irish town of Limerick.
•Limericks are generally meant to be humorous.
•Limericks have 5 lines.
•The rhyme and rhythm of a limerick helps it read as a light-hearted poem.
•In lines 1,2, and 5 –the last words rhyme.
•In lines 3 and 4 –the last words rhyme (but not with lines 1, 2, and 5)

The students are so excited to read them to you during Student Led Conferences!

Spell-A-Thon Practice

The students began practicing this week for their Spell-A-Thon test.  Each day we focused on ten words and the students wrote a pre-test.  Following their pre-test, the students worked on various activities to reinforce the spelling of the ten words.  Our class is working very hard in hopes of winning the class ice cream party for the most students with 100%.

Math

This week we started working with money.  We covered the following goals:
- count any combination of pennies, nickels and dimes (two coin types) up to a dollar
- identify 25 cents in any combination of coins
- count any combination of coins up to a dollar

The students enjoyed playing "Adding or Trading" with a partner to reinforce their ability to add any combination of coins to a dollar.

Science

This week the students were given their next challenge:

Great job building a sturdy table for our shelter! We've been on the island for a few days now. All that we've eaten are some bananas and a few berries. Marissa and Taylor decide that they would like to look for more food, while the others work on a plan to get off the island. They need a way to carry the food back to our shelter. Taylor suggests that they make some sort of a backpack. Marissa finds some tree bark and leaves that they could use to make the bags. We aren't sure which material will work best to hold the food. We will need to test the two materials to determine which one will support more mass.

The testable question is:  Will different stocks of paper support different mass?

Conclusion:  Construction paper supports more mass than bond paper.

On Thursday we had our staff vs the girls floor hockey team at lunch recess.  It was a hard fought battle that ended up in a tie!  Great game girls!

Congratulations to Mr. G for being chosen as Student of the Week during assembly.  I'm very proud of the hard work and determination you've demonstrated recently!
