VIP
We had a great week with Mr. J as our VIP. It was fun getting to know you better!
I would like to send a big shout out to all of the parents for your support with our Grade 3 Bake Sale. The students were extremely proud to participate in this fundraiser in support of Red Cross. I'm happy to announce that we were able to raise $1,208.00 for the residents of Fort McMurray affected by the wild fires.

I Wish My Teacher Knew........
I can't take credit for the idea for our Monday morning journal writing topic. A teacher in Denver uses the writing prompt "I Wish My Teacher Knew" every year with her grade 3 students. This idea came from teachers discussing how best to reach their students needs, on all levels. I loved this idea and wanted to try in my own classroom. On Monday I asked the students to share something about themselves that I don't know. I told them that they didn't have to write anything that they felt was too personal. Many students honestly felt like I already knew everything that there was to know about them. I am so thankful for this idea and feel like I have a greater understanding of my students after this writing assignment.
During our read aloud time we continued to focus on our reading strategies using "Wonder" as a mentor text. We specifically worked on Expanding Vocabulary by tuning into interesting words. Students who tune in to interesting words expand their vocabulary by focusing on these new words and their meaning. By looking for words that are interesting and unique, children not only increase their vocabulary, but they also enhance their comprehension. A child must have multiple exposures to a word in order for it to become a part of his/her vocabulary.
How can you help your child with this strategy at home?
1. When your child is reading or you are reading to your child, ask your child to find three interesting words. Have your child write these words down and talk about the meaning of these words. See if anyone in your family is able to use the words in a sentence. Add these words to your family word collector.
2. Encourage your child to find interesting words when watching TV or in daily conversation. When tuning in to an interesting word, help your child understand the word and then add it to the family word collector.
3. As always, modeling is a wonderful way to spark interest in children. When you are reading a magazine, newspaper, or book, tune into an interesting word and discuss it with your child. Explain that even adult readers tune into interesting words to better understand text.
We also started using a Lapbook as a fun way to increase comprehension by responding to the novel Wonder. Lapbooks are great for keeping everything organized in one place.
Math
The students were so excited to start our Division Unit in math. The following curricular objectives were covered:
- Sharing - Knowing the Number of Sets - identify the number of objects in a set given the total number of objects divided into a given number of sets
- Sharing - Knowing How Many in Each Set - determine the number of sets given a number of objects to be divided equally and the number in each set
- Sets - Identify the objects to be divided into sets, the number of sets and the number of objects in each set
- Two Ways of Sharing - Recognize which information is provided and which is absent among: how many sets, how many in each set and how many altogether
Science
Sound- The students got to experience the nature of sound! They explored the different qualities of sound, the movement of sound through different materials, the process of hearing, and then apply their learning by building a sound-making device.
Structures and Design- Through interactive activities and demonstrations, the students gained an insight into the shapes, materials and designs used in the construction of a variety of buildings and bridges. They were challenged to select materials, design, and test their own bridge.

Art
In art this week the students started painting their Monarch Butterflies using a technique called Pointillism. This technique involves painting using tiny dots of various colours, which become blended in the viewer's eye.
