May 2 - 6

This week the students had the opportunity to be involved in many activities to celebrate Education Week.

On Monday we had a guest instructor in to teach the students some pretty sweet zumba moves.

Thank you so much to the Devon Lion's Club members for coming to our school on Wednesday to read to the students.  We really enjoyed having one of the volunteers read "Mortimer" by Robert Munsch to our class.  The Lion's Club also gave us a novel called the Castle in the Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop to add to our classroom library!

Hats On for Mental Health

On May 4, 2016,  the students were invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.

Read Aloud

This week I started reading the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio during our Read Aloud time.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting grade 5, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, and others. These perspectives convey individual's struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.  Each day as I read Wonder to the students, we will continue to focus on reading strategies and vocabulary specific to the book.

Diary of An Animal Writing Project

This week we began planning and writing a diary for the animal they have researched.  The students were asked to use their humour to write about their animal research.  Each diary entry should include one real fact about the animal they are writing a diary about.  The students are doing a great job so far!

Math
This week we did the following in math class:
  • round whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.
  • estimate sums and differences by rounding each addend to the nearest ten or hundred.
  • solve word problems by estimating rather than calculating.
The students always enjoy playing "Soldier Salute" to practice their math fact fluency.

Social Studies

The students are working very hard on their Ukraine google slide presentations. Each slide must include a paragraph and three pictures to go along with each topic. This week the students worked on the following slides:
  • interesting facts
  • culture
  • goods and services
  • products

Our VIP for the week was Mr. T! The class really enjoyed learning more about you!

Student of the Week

Congratulations to our student of the week!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!
