Language Arts
During our read aloud time this week I read the book "Where Does the Butterfly Go When It Rains" by May Garelick. In this book the author explores what happens to various animals when it rains. Where do they go? What do they do? I used this as a mentor text to model how to improve our comprehension by making predictions as we read. I asked the students if they have ever seen a butterfly out in the rain. Most of the students said no but they had great "predictions" as to where a butterfly might go in the rain. Unfortunately, May Garelick doesn't answer this question in the book. She leaves the reader wondering and making predictions about where butterflies do go when it rains.
During Writer's Workshop this week the students were introduced to persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is all about expressing a strong opinion and trying to convince your readers to agree with you. Using "I am the Cat, I am the Dog" by Donald Hall as a mentor text, the students were asked to compare/contrast the two animals. After comparing and contrasting the animals, the students began writing a persuasive paragraph about which animal is better - cats or dogs?
Math
This week we started our Geometry Unit in math. We worked on creating and sorting regular as well as irregular polygons, including: • triangles • quadrilaterals • pentagons • hexagons • octagons according to the number of sides.
Social Studies
During social studies the students took their Peru jot notes and put together 10 complete sentences about their research topic. Next week they will adding their research sentences and pictures to their "Peru Suitcases."
On Friday we celebrated the Peruvian Culture by participating in various activities. A big thank you to Mrs. Ott for preparing tradition Peruvian food for the students to try.
The students also made Peruvian masks and weaved friendship bracelets.
Science
On Friday we decided it was time to release our butterflies. Our butterflies hadn't been very active in the classroom. But as soon as we took the habitat outside, it was like they had renewed sense of themselves The butterflies started flying around inside the habitat like we had never seen before. As soon as we unzipped the top, they started to fly out. All of the students cheered and I got all choked up. We were able to watch the butterflies for a few minutes as they stayed flying near the school. Soon enough they were out of sight.
Fun in the Sun! The students had a great time and really enjoyed their first week of swimming lessons!
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
