June 6 - 10th

We started the week off with a bang! On Monday we joined 3B on a field trip to the Ukrainian Cultural Village. The students really enjoyed being immersed in the Ukrainian Culture. They said it felt like they were in the "olden times!" Thanks to Mrs. Marrelli for volunteering to join us on the the trip. It was a great day.

In the church the girls sit on the left.....

...and the boys sit on the right!

The students enjoyed trying some tradition Ukrainian food like borscht and perogies!

Luckily there are no trains that run on these tracks!

We got to visit an old farmstead. A farm isn't complete without chickens.....

and pigs!

The students enjoyed visiting the grocery store. The prices are much lower that what we pay now!

I guess the students don't like being put in jail!

Curriculum Update

Language Arts

During Writer's Workshop the students are finishing up their "All About Me" paragraphs. These paragraphs will be put together into a book that will come home at the end of the year.

We also worked on our contributions to the "Important Books" for the teachers leaving this year.

Math

This week we finished our fractions unit and the students wrote a quiz on Friday.

The outcomes covered were:

  • Fractions of a Region or Length - parts of a whole must be equal to determine an entire measurement when given only a fraction of the entire measurement.
  • Comparing Fractions - decide when a picture shows more than half or less than half, about a half, about a third or about a forth.
Science

The students run into the classroom everyday, excited to see what's happening with the chrysalis. I'm happy to report that our first butterflies emerged over the weekend. We have watermelon in the habitats for them to eat. We will be releasing the butterflies once they all emerge.

Social Studies

During social studies the students took their Peru jot notes and put together 10 complete sentences about their research topic.  Next week they will adding their research sentences and pictures to their "Peru Suitcases."

Art

The grade 3 students were asked to work on a special art project for the Volunteer Tea.

Phys Ed

A big thank you to Mrs. Pigford for leading our phys ed class in some yoga exercises. The students loved it!
