Congratulations to Mr. E for being our VIP this week. We really enjoyed getting to know you better!
We also celebrated a friends birthday this week. Happy Birthday Isaiah!
Reading Workshop
This week during reading workshop I read the story Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. It was the perfect summer. That is, until Jeremy Ross moved into the house down the street and became neighborhood enemy number one. Luckily the boy's Dad had a surefire way to get rid of enemies: Enemy Pie. But part of the secret recipe is spending an entire day playing with the enemy. The boy learns an effective recipe for turning his best enemy into his best friend.
While reading this story I focused on the comprehension strategy of making predictions as you read and using text to confirm you predictions. To predict, readers tell what they think will happen in the story; to confirm, readers find out whether their predictions were true, partially true, or way off. Using this strategy helps readers make connections to the text, think ahead, and become more engaged. Readers follow three steps:
1. Look at the details in the selection.
2. Decide what they think will happen next based on the details and background
knowledge.
3. Look back and check to make sure the prediction was accurate (confirm).
Freckle Juice
This week we started our Novel Study of Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Freckle Juice is a story about a boy who wanted freckles so his mom wouldn't notice that his neck was dirty. If she doesn't know it's dirty, he won't have to wash it. Sounds about right. Some boys will do whatever it takes not have to a bath!
For each chapter we will complete various "reading responses" to apply specific vocabulary and comprehension skills to the book. This week while reading chapter one we discussed genre as well as made predictions and connections to the text.
Congratulations to our "Amazing" readers who have flown to their next destination!
Writing Workshop
This week we focused on elaborating and expanding basic sentences. The students started with a simple sentence and then asked where, when and why in order to expand the simple sentence.
Math
This week in math we began working on Lesson NS3-11: l Regrouping of Ones, Tens, and Hundreds
The curricular outcomes focused on were as follows:
- regroup to write numbers as sums of ones, tens, and hundreds in different ways
The process of grouping ten single blocks into one stack of ten is called regrouping because you are rearranging the blocks into groups.
The mental math strategy that we focused on this week was Adding Doubles. To practice this strategy the students played the game Help on the Double.
Social Studies
This week we began our study of India. In preparation of our "pretend" trip, the students filled in and coloured their Canadian passports..
Then students researched some essential questions that we would like answered about India. They worked in groups to research some of the following questions:
- What language do they speak?
- What is the name of their currency?
- What do people wear in India?
- What do people eat in India?
- What is the weather like at this time of the year?
- What modes of transportation is used?
- What do kids do there for fun?
Art
"Blazing Banyan Trees"
This week our art project involved drawing and colouring "Blazing Banyan Trees." The Banyan Tree is the national tree of India. This is a great project to teach negative and positive space. First we drew the trunk and branches and painted them black. Then they used oil pastel to colour in the negative space. The students were shown a colour wheel and were asked to use complementary colours in each section between the branches.
Congratulations to Mr. R for being chosen as the Student of the Week during assembly on Friday!
