We had a very busy week in 3A. The students are working hard preparing for the Christmas concert on December 6th.
Reading Workshop
Reading Workshop
This week I introduced the reading strategy of "Making Inferences" by reading the story My Lucky Day by Keiko Kosza.
Inferring is very similar to predicting. Inferring is kind of like the big umbrella and predicting fits neatly under it. But what’s the difference between them?
Predicting is when you use your schema + clues the author gives you to make an “educated” guess. A prediction can usually be confirmed or denied through further reading. {Example: I predict that the family will adopt the dog. I turn the pages and they do. My prediction was confirmed.} Making inferences also requires your schema + clues the author gives you to make a guess, but inferences are not clearly confirmed or denied through reading. {Example: I think that Alexander just woke up in a bad mood and is looking for all the bad things that could go wrong.}
In the story My Lucky Day the author keeps the reader guessing or "making inferences" about who's lucky day it really is....the fox or the piglet?
To reinforce this strategy the students participated in an activity where they had to examine a picture carefully and make an inference about the situation.
We finished reading Freckle Juice this week. The discussed the elements of story and the students were asked to map out the setting, main character, problem and solution.
Writing Workshop
The students continue to free write in their journals on Mondays.

Complete sentence writing continues to be our focus during Writing Workshop. The students really enjoy the draw and write activities to practice expanding their sentences.
Math
This week we used base ten drawings and the standard algorithm to add 2-digit number, without regrouping. This is in preparation of 2-digit addition by regrouping 10 ones blocks as 1 tens block.
Social Studies
We continued our unit on India this week. The students have enjoyed learning about the Quality of Life in India through the eyes of our friend Ravi.
A big thank you to Mrs. Delbridge for providing many items from India to display in our classroom.
PE
The focus in PE this week was basketball skills and games.
Devon|Christmas Elves
The Devon Christmas Elves has a mission to ensure that every family experiences the joy of Christmas.
As part of our social studies unit on "Global Citizenship" the grade 3 classes will be collecting the non-perishable food items and toys for RBES. After our Friday assembly on December 9th, our class along with 3B, will be walking to deliver the food to the sorting location.
This week our class decorated two of six boxes that will kept in the school to collect the Christmas Elves donations. The students also created posters using the Chrome Books to encourage students to donate. Thanks to Mrs. Forchuk and Mrs. Tewitz for organizing the Christmas Elves drive!
Art
The students began working on a snowman painting that will hung in the gym during our Christmas concert.
The students enjoyed wearing their jersey's and spirit wear on Friday.
