November 28 - December 1

I can't believe that December is here already and Christmas is right around the corner. The students have been working very hard preparing for their Christmas concert coming up on Tuesday. I've sent home copies of the lyrics for "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Frosty the Snowman." Please encourage your child to practice their songs over the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the concert!

In addition to practicing for the Christmas concert, we have been very busy in the classroom as well.

Following is a curricular overview of our week:

Reading Workshop

This week during reading workshop we focused on the comprehension strategy of "asking questions."  Questions like, “I wonder why…?” or “What does ___ mean?” keep us wanting to read to find out answers. Our curiosity compels us to find the answers.

To model this strategy I read the book "More Than Anything Else" by Marie Bradby. This is an excellent book to get the kids asking questions simply because it is not written in our time period. It’s also great because kids have to infer what exactly what the main character wants to do more than anything as it’s not completely revealed until the end of the book.

Writing Workshop

The Devon Dispatch is seeking submissions from schools for their Annual Christmas Greeting issue. They are looking for letters from  students on their favourite holiday, Christmas memory, why they're looking towards the season, or thoughts about the season. The letters chosen will be printed in the December 23rd issue of the Devon Dispatch. So our class decided that they would like to participate in this writing opportunity. I gave the students the choice of 3 sentences starters. Then they used the Chromebooks to type up a paragraph about why they love Christmas. They really enjoyed using the "word count" option to ensure that their paragraph didn't exceed 50 words. I will be submitting the paragraphs this week. Good luck to all of the students! Hopefully a few of our paragraphs will be printed in the newspaper!

Math

This week in math we focused on double digit addition with regrouping. The students practiced adding two-digit numbers (using base ten drawings and the standard algorithm) which involved the regrouping of 10 ones blocks as 1 tens block.

We also played a partner tic-tac-toe game to reinforce this concept.

Social Studies

In Social Studies this week we finished discussing and filling in the customs and traditions of India in our travel journal. Next week we will begin looking at services in India.

Art

Art this week involved finishing our snowmen and making ornaments to decorate the gym for the Christmas concert.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.....in the classroom!

These four students were the lucky winners of the candy canes from our snowman advent calendar this week!

Have a great long weekend everyone!
