December 5 - 9th

It was such a great week in 3A!  We are really getting into the Christmas spirit.

VIP
Congratulations to Mr. K who was our VIP this week. We enjoyed getting to know you better!

On Tuesday afternoon/evening the grade 3/4 classes performed two songs for their Christmas concert.  The students looked great and they did a wonderful job of singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Frosty the Snowman!"

Devon Christmas Elves

During assembly on Friday the Grade 3 classes presented approximately 900 food and toy donations to Mrs. Rosenteter with the Devon Christmas Elves.

Following our assembly the students delivered the food and toy donations to the Devon Christmas Elves depot. The students really enjoyed going to the depot and sorting the food into the appropriate categories.  They felt proud to be able to contribute to our community in this way. Taking part in this charity helped the students to realize how blessed we are to be grateful for what we have.

Thank you so much to the RBES families for your generous donations! I would also like to give a big shout out to Mrs. Bade for supplying a bus and donating her time to transport the students to the depot!

Curricular Update

Reading Workshop

This week I read the "Polar Express" written and illustrated by Carl Van Allsburg. This wonderful book tells the story of a little boy who travels to the North Pole and is given the first gift of Christmas by Santa.

I used this book as a mentor text to discuss the elements of a story by filling in a story map. A story map is a strategy that uses a graphic organizer to help students learn the elements of a book or story. By identifying story characters, setting, problem and solution, students read carefully to learn the details and increase their comprehension.

Writing Workshop

In Writer's Workshop the students were asked to write about what they would ask for if they received the first gift of Christmas. The focus for this writing project was to put their writing in a proper paragraph. The students' paragraphs needed to include a topic sentence, at least five detail sentences and a concluding sentence.

The students also wrote our letters to Santa this week.  We focused on learning the proper format of writing a friendly letter.  The students are anxiously waiting for their responses from Santa.

Math

This week in math the focus was on adding three-digit numbers (using base ten models and the standard algorithm) involving the regrouping of ones as tens and tens as hundreds. In addition to the practice in our workbook, the students also played a few games to reinforce this concept.

Social Studies

We continued to work our Travel Journal this week, focusing on services in India.

Art

We started a top secret art project this week. You will have to wait until Christmas to find out what we've been working on!

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Miss B for being chosen as the Student of the Week during assembly.  She is a kind hearted student who is always willing to help out. Keep up the great work!
