December 12 - 16th

India Day

I read the book "Hannah the Henna Helper" by Klaire Pearson prior to our India culture day.  This book gave the students ideas for different designs they could have done in henna.

On Friday the Grade 3 students at RBES enjoyed the day being immersed in the India culture.  The students rotated between the three classes participating in various activities to celebrate India.  In our room the students enjoyed traditional Indian food and they played a board game called Pachisi. Mrs. Forchuk and Mrs. Tewitz taught the students how to make Diwali lanterns and helped them decorate India flag cookies.  Thank you to the parents from 3B who made the flag cookies for the students! In Mrs. Milson's room the students had the opportunity to try on traditional Indian clothes and have henna tattoo art done on their hand/arms. Each of the students also got to take home a peacock feather. The peacock is the national bird of India.

Author Visit

The students really enjoyed our visit from children's author and storyteller Tolowa Mollel. Tololwa Mollel has written seventeen internationally published books and several plays. His books include award winning titles such as Rhinos for Lunch and Elephants for Supper.

Curricular Update

This week during Reader's Workshop we continued to focus on identifying problem, solution  and events in stories. To model this I read the story "Santa's Stuck" by Rhonda Greene. The students were asked to identify the events leading up to the solution in the story.

The students used the Spelling City website to prepare for their second Word Wall Review test.

The students really enjoyed participating in the reader's theatre entitled "Bob, the Goofy Reindeer." They had a great time performing for Mrs. Murtha-Toles 1/2 Class.

The students worked hard on their handwriting this week to be able to write "Merry Christmas" on their special project.

Math

This week the students wrote an assessment to test their knowledge of 2- and 3- digit addition. We continued to work on subtraction math strategies to help improve our mental math abilities.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to Miss S. for being chosen as Student of the Week!
