January 14 - 18th

This week our VIP was Mr. R. We had a lot of fun getting to know our friend better.

Curricular Update

Writing Workshop

During Writer's Workshop the students completed their "Reaching for Our Goals in 2017" this week.  The students' balloons are on display inside our classroom if you'd like to stop by and take a look.  They turned out so cute!

This week the students began their "All About Me" paragraphs. Each month, until the end of the year, the students will choose from a list of topics to write a paragraph about themselves. The purpose of this assignment is to focus on proper paragraph writing, including a topic, detail and concluding sentences. After writing on the topic "About My Family" the students were asked to type their paragraphs on the Chromebook. Next week they will draw and colour an illustration to go along with their writing.

Reading Workshop

This week during Reading Workshop I read the story "A Bad Case of the Stripes" by David Shannon.

Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don't like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she's so worried that she she breaks out in a bad case of stripes!

Using this story as a mentor text I modeled the comprehension strategy of summarizing and retelling the story. The students were then asked to fill in a summarizing graphic organizer using the "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" strategy.

Math

This week we focused on subtracting triple digit numbers with regrouping using expanded form, ones and tens tables, and base ten models.

The students practiced their 3-digit subtraction by playing a fun board game.

Science

This week we continued to discussed how sound is the result of vibration.

By extending a ruler over the edge of a desk and pulling down on the ruler, the students were able to observe the different "pitches" that the ruler made. We were able to measure the highness and lowness of sound according to how far out the ruler was extended. The length of the ruler determines the "pitch" of the sound. High and low sounds depend on how fast an object vibrates. When the ruler was vibrating faster, we heard a high sound. A longer ruler makes a lower sound and a shorter ruler makes a higher sound.

We also learned about how the human ear senses vibrations.  We discovered that the ear has three main parts: The Outer Ear, The Middle Ear and the Inner Ear.  We hear sounds with our ears.  Vibrations move rapidly through the air towards our ears and make part of the human ear vibrate.

Phys Ed

The focus of Phys Ed this week was working on gymnastics skills.

Art

The students completed their watercolor Winter Birch Trees during art class.  They are up in the hallway just outside our classroom if you'd like to take a look.

Congratulations to Cole for being chosen as the Student of the Week!

The students had a great time dressing up for "beach day" on Wednesday.
