It's hard to believe that the year is almost half over. The students have come so far since September and I look forward to the last half of the school year with your children.
Congratulations to Miss B. for being our VIP this week. You were a great helper in the classroom and we loved learning more about you!

Curricular Update
Reader's Workshop
This week I read "Snow Globe Family" by Jane O'Connor to the students. This is a wonderful story about a little family who lives in a snow globe. They long for a swirling snowstorm—if only someone in the big family would pick up the snow globe and give it a great big shake.
Writing Workshop
We spent some time focusing once again on "story elements" and "summarizing" using "Snow Globe Family" as a mentor text.
The students enjoyed participating in "Author's Chair" to share their summary of the Snow Globe Family.
Next week we will follow up with a writing project about "Life in a Snow Globe." The focus for this activity will be to use strong verbs and different sentences starters in our writing.
The students enjoyed our "Making Words" activity this week. They enjoyed trying to figure out the secret word which was "Snowflakes." Shhhhh, don't tell anyone!
Math
We continued to focus on subtracting triple digit numbers with regrouping using base ten materials and the standard algorithm.
Science
This week we learned that instruments can be categorized into 3 families: wind, string and percussion instruments. The students were involved in an activity were they had to sort a variety of instruments into the appropriate categories.
Art
In art this week I read the story "THE HAIRY FELLOWS: A RABBIT'S GUIDE TO DRAWING" by Tamara Martain Spady.
Using this book as a mentor text, the students were led through a guided drawing lesson of how to draw a rabbit. They had so much fun and their drawings turned out so cute!
I even gave the drawing a try!
Skating
We had a fantastic week of skating. I would like to send out a big thank you to the parent volunteers who came each day to tie skates and for going on the ice with the kids. Your help was so greatly appreciated! Also, thank you to Mr. Larson for planning such a fun week of skating activities for the students.
