March 13 - 17th

We had an extremely busy, but fun week in 3A!

Writer's Workshop

The students continued to write setting for their Villan's Place.

Amazing Race Reading Challenge

Congratulations to our wonderful readers who made it all the way around the world in our Amazing Race Challenge! I hope you enjoy your new books!

Math

The students were so excited to start our Multiplication Unit this week.  I introduced the unit by reading "The Best of Times" by Greg Tang.

The Best of Times gives kids an intuitive understanding of multiplication, encouraging them to arrive at answers on their own rather than memorizing the times tables. A child who can multiply by two, for instance, can multiply by four and even eight! Likewise, times six builds on times two and times three.

We worked on thinking about multiplication when attempting to add "equal" groups.  In addition to using repeated addition to calculate the total number of dots below (3+3+3+3+3), we can use multiplication.  The following can be thought of in terms of:

5 groups of 3 or 5 x 3 = 15

Science

Building Bridges with Mr. Caron

Thank you so much to Kadie's mom for coming in to volunteer during our Bridge Building with Mr. Caron! Your help was greatly appreciated!

This week we also began our Survivor Building Challenge as part of our "Testing Materials" and "Building with a Variety of Materials" units in science.  On the way to Tunisia our flight had to make an emergency landing on a deserted island.  The students will participate in a variety of building challenges while trying to "survive" on the island.  The students have been placed in tribes and will work together through the various challenges.

Social

The students enjoyed preparing their "Tunisian Presentation" for Student Led Conferences.

PE

The students continued to practice their passing and receiving skills in PE.

Art

This week the students started drawing their "Bridge Silhouettes."

Student Led Conferences

Words Their Way

Tunisia Class Presentation

Thank you to all of the students and parents that were able to make it out for Student Led Conferences. Mrs. Delbridge loved spending time with all of you!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

A sneaky Leprechaun left a note sending us on a hunt for a pot of the gold.  We teamed up with 3B to find the treasure at the end of the rainbow!
