October 30 - November 3

We had a "spooktacular" week in 3A!

The students completed their "scream" blow painting just in time for Halloween. Watered down tempera paint was dabbed around the head. The students then used a straw to blow outward as much as possible to get thick and then thin lines for the hair. The students had a great time with this project.

The students also made jack-o-lanterns and spiral ghosts to decorate the classroom for our party.

Wednesday was a fun day full of Halloween activities. We started the day off with a group picture and then went to the gym for the parade of costumes.

We spent the afternoon playing games, eating snacks and watching a movie. The students enjoyed preparing the bingo cards by filling in their own Halloween words. The best part was nibbling on "rockets" which doubled as bingo chips!

After our bingo game, the students got to participate in three minute-to-win-it challenges. The first challenge was "rocket stacking" to see who could stack the most rockets without them falling down!

"Smarite Suck Up" was the second challenge where the students had to transfer as many smarties from their plate to a cup using a straw!

Finally, the students were challenged to pick up "ghost poop" with chop sticks. The student with the most marshmallows or "ghost poop" in their cup was the winner!

Thank you so much to the parents who supplied food for our Halloween party. It was delicious!

We finished off our party by watching a bit of the movie "Coraline." The students continued to watch it during lunch for the rest of the week.

Curricular Update

Writing Workshop

During journal writing this week the students were introduced to the editing checklist. The self-edit step in writing encourages students to evaluate specific features of their writing and increases self-awareness of writing conventions.

Author's Chair

The students continue to practice TAG during author's chair. They enjoy "telling" one thing they liked about the writing and, "asking" one question. We are still working on "giving" a suggestion for improvement. I continue to reassure the class that peer review is an important part of the writing process and it helps the students learn how to write for an audience.

Shared Reading

This week we started reading aloud as a class from our Collections book series. During the strategy mini-lesson I focused on fluency by modelling how to read with expression. The students were given the option to read aloud to the class or to pass if they felt uncomfortable. I was pleased that so many students were excited to read out loud to myself and their peers.

Math

We finished our Patterning Unit this week. The following outcomes were covered:

- the students learned the value of a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and loonie.
- count on by 5s, 10s, or 25s to find the total value of a collection of coins.
- identify the missing coins to make the total value equal to a given amount.
-  replace a collection of coins with a single coin of equal value
- egroup coins to make the same total with the least number of coins.
- given a value, students will use the least number of coins to make the value.
- count up by 10s to find the difference owed from a dollar
- find the number of dollars and cents in a collection of coins.

Math Quiz - on Friday the students wrote a math quiz to complete our patterning unit.

Social Studies

We also finished our mapping unit this week. The students worked on activities to reinforce the names of  provinces as well as making words with the letters in "CONTINENT."

PE

We worked through a series of fitness centres this week in phys ed.

Art

The students loved following along with an online video to draw a minion in art class this week. The website is called Art for Kids Hub. There are many great videos on how to draw, paint, fold and sculpt many cool things! Please click on the following link to check it out at home.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week. You are a shining star in 3A!
