December 4 - 8th

We had such a great start to December. On Monday the students were so excited to find out that Santa had sent an Elf on the Shelf to our classroom. The students enjoyed brainstorming possible names and then taking it to a vote. I am happy to introduce our classroom Elf on the Shelf - Chip!

Chip arrived with a letter explaining to the students that he needs their help to spread kindness and cheer this holiday season. Each day he has been leaving notes with suggested "acts of kindness" that he would like the students to do. Some of the notes have asked the students to "show kindness by using nice manners" or "show kindness by playing with someone new today."

Each morning the students are so excited to write in their Elf on the Shelf Morning Report. In the report they document what Chip has been doing and what the kindness note says that he left behind.

We used Art of Kids Hub to learn how to draw our elf Chip.

Devon Christmas Elves

Surprise Delivery

On Thursday we received a surprise delivery of over 500 food items to our classroom!  We were so overwhelmed and grateful to receive this donation from one of our 3A parents and his company. Thank you so much for taking the time to collect these donations and to bring them to our classroom. What an amazing surprise it was!

I would also like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the parents of 3A who were able to donate to the Devon Christmas Elves. We are so blessed to have such a great parent group who are so giving and supportive. Thank you, thank you!

During assembly on Friday the Grade 3 classes presented over 2000 food donations to Mrs. Rosenteter with the Devon Christmas Elves!

Following our assembly the students delivered the food donations to the Devon Christmas Elves depot. The students really enjoyed going to the depot and sorting the food into the appropriate categories.  They felt proud to be able to contribute to our community in this way. Taking part in this charity helped the students to realize how blessed we are to be grateful for what we have.

I would also like to give a big shout out to Mrs. Bade for supplying the bus and donating her time to transport the students to the depot!

Curriculum Update

Writing Workshop

In Writer's Workshop the students were asked to write about what they would ask for if they received the first gift of Christmas. The focus for this writing project was to put their writing in a proper paragraph. The students' paragraphs needed to include a topic sentence, at least five detail sentences and a concluding sentence.

The students also wrote the rough drafts of their letters to Santa this week. We focused on learning the proper format of writing a friendly letter.  Next week we will finish the good copies and mail the letters to the North Pole.

Reading Workshop

The students started working on their December Reading Comprehension journals. This journal includes one page stories to help the students with their fluency, comprehension and building reading confidence. Each story provides the students with a genuine opportunity to practice reading short stories and answering questions to test their comprehension. The students are working through these comprehension checks on an individual basis. Their goal is to complete the journal before Christmas break.

Math

This week in math we began working on Lesson NS3-11: l Regrouping of Ones, Tens, and Hundreds

The curricular outcomes focused on were as follows:
- regroup to write numbers as sums of ones, tens, and hundreds in different ways

The process of grouping ten single blocks into one stack of ten is called regrouping because you are rearranging the blocks into groups.

Science

The students did an amazing job of designing and creating their musical instruments.  They loved presenting to the class and demonstrating how to change the volume and pitch on their instruments.

Before taking their instruments home, the students formed bands and enjoyed having a little "jam session!"  It was so much fun!

The students also wrote their Hearing and Sound exam this week. These tests will be returned to the students on Monday.

VIP

We enjoyed getting to know our VIP just a little bit better. Thank you for all of your help this week!

Congratulations to our Student of the Week. You are always such a great role model for your peers. Keep up the great work!
