Reader's Workshop

This week we read "Snow Globe Family" by Jane O'Connor to the students.  This is a wonderful story about a little family who lives in a snow globe. They long for a swirling snowstorm—if only someone in the big family would pick up the snow globe and give it a great big shake.

We also read "The Birth of a Snowflake" this week. Each student received their own copy of this booklet. As we read this story, the students highlighted key words on each page. The students then transferred these key words onto the "How Snowflakes are Formed" graphic organizer. This idea of taking "jot" notes helped to teach the students how to collect and organize key information about snowflakes.

Reading Assessment

The students completed a few reading assessments this week. They were asked to read three level N books and answer comprehension questions based on the texts. Level N is an appropriate level for mid Grade 3.

Writing Workshop

We spent some time focusing once again on "story elements" and "summarizing" using "Snow Globe Family" as a mentor text.

After reading the story students will compare and contrast the two different families from the story.

Word Study

The students continue to work on activities each week to reinforce their Spelling List patterns.

Each week the students are also introduced to 5 high frequency word wall words. The students then write complete sentences with these words in our "Rainbow Sentences" activity.

The students enjoyed our "Making Words" activity this week. They enjoyed trying to figure out the secret word which was "Snowflakes." Shhhhh, don't tell anyone!

Handwriting

This week we worked on the letter "I" in handwriting.

Math

This week in math the focus was on adding three-digit numbers (using base ten models and the standard algorithm) involving the regrouping of ones as tens and tens as hundreds. In addition to the practice in our workbook, the students also played a few games to reinforce this concept.

Social Studies

We continued to work our Travel Journal this week, focusing on Environment and Goods and Services.

Art

We finished our "Happy Feet "art this week by gluing the penguins to the watercolour background and adding shadows under their feet. This is my favourite art project so far this year!

PE

The focus for PE this week was to work on Gymnastics skills.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
