We kicked off the week in 3A by celebrating our Very Important Person. Thank you to our friend for sharing his poster and special items with the class!
One of our favourite parts of the week is always when parents come in to share their special letter with the VIP.
VIP's Lunch Buddy
We also celebrated one of our friend's birthdays on Monday. Thanks for sharing the yummy treats!
Student Led Conferences
Thank you for those of you who shared in your child's celebration of learning on Tuesday night. It was so wonderful to see the students taking the lead and eagerly demonstrating their knowledge and skills.
Penguin Multiplication - The students were asked to demonstrate their multiplication skills by playing "Penguin Multiplication."
Writer's Workshop - The students wrote a paragraph about their favourite activity to do as a family. They were asked to focus on including a topic, 5 detail and concluding sentences.
Making Words - Everyone had a lot of fun making words with the given letters. and trying to figure out the mystery word.
Survivor - The students led their parents in completing a building challenge to answer the question "which pillar shape would hold the most mass - triangular, rectangular or cylindrical?
This week we worked on many St. Patrick's Day themed activities.
Writing Workshop
In writing workshop the students were asked to write an opinion piece answering the question "Do you believe in Leprechauns?" We brainstormed many reasons why Leprechauns might be real and why they might not be. The students were asked to write a paragraph stating their opinion and backing it up with three reasons to support their opinion.
Reading Workshop
The students enjoyed reading two separate St. Patrick's Day passages about Leprechauns and Rainbows. They were then asked to answer questions about the passages to test their reading comprehension.
Amazing Race
Congratulations to our Amazing Race flyers this week!
Word Work
The students continued to work on their dictionary skills by looking up St. Patrick's Day words, writing the words in sentences and drawing an illustration to go along with the words.
Spell-a-thon
Practicing Our Words
I am so proud of how well everyone did on their spell-a-thon tests. Thank you so much for helping your child prepare for the test and for collecting pledges to support our spell-a-thon fundraiser. Please remember to send in the pledges by Tuesday, March 20th.
Congratulations to our 100% Spellers!
Math
The students were so excited to start our Multiplication Unit this week. I introduced the unit by reading "The Best of Times" by Greg Tang.
The Best of Times gives kids an intuitive understanding of multiplication, encouraging them to arrive at answers on their own rather than memorizing the times tables. A child who can multiply by two, for instance, can multiply by four and even eight! Likewise, times six builds on times two and times three.
We worked on thinking about multiplication when attempting to add "equal" groups. In addition to using repeated addition to calculate the total number of dots below (3+3+3+3+3), we can use multiplication. The following can be thought of in terms of:
5 groups of 3 or 5 x 3 = 15
Science
In science we continued to focus on testing the strength of different joiners. Their second challenge involved making cubes with toothpicks and using marshmallows, puffed wheat and plasticine as connectors. The students concluded that cubes joined with plasticine where stronger and held more mass that those made with marshmallows or puffed wheat cereal.
Our final survivor challenge focused on identifying and applying methods for making structures stronger and more stable. Using strips of manila tag and fasteners, the students tested the strength of different shapes (triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon). The students worked to figure out ways to make those shapes stronger and more stable. They discovered that the triangle shape is very strong. The class found that many of the supports added created the shape of a triangle.
Art
In art the students followed a glyph to colour their Leprechaun pictures. They way they coloured their picture was dependent on how they answered the glyph questions.
They also followed three Art Hub for Kids lessons to created their own St. Patrick's Day picture.
Looking Good in Green!
The students enjoyed some St. Patrick's Day treats on Friday.
