World Down Syndrome Day
On Wednesday, March 21st we celebrated World Down Sydrome Day by "rocking our socks" and participating in various classroom activities.
We watched a great video called "Just Like You - Down Syndrome. This video was narrated by a few teenagers with Down Syndrome and some without. The pairs of friends talk about what they have in common and what makes them different.
We also watched the online book called "My Friend Isabelle," by Eliza Woloson. The story focuses on the friendship between two kids. The characters both like to draw, dance, read, and play at the park. They both like to eat Cheerios. They both cry if their feelings are hurt. And like most friends, they are also different from each other. Isabelle has Down syndrome. Charlie doesn't. Written by Isabelle's mother, this wonderful story encourages readers to think about what makes a friendship special.
As a class we read a mini book called "All About Down Syndrome."
The students enjoyed designed their own "crazy socks" to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness.

Math
This week in math we focused on using arrays to show multiplication concepts. Students can more readily develop an understanding of multiplication if they see visual representations of the concepts. For example, they can picture students in a marching band in equal rows or chairs set up in rows in an auditorium. These arrangements all have something in common. They are all in rows and columns. An arrangement of objects, pictures or numbers in columns or rows is called an array. Arrays are useful representations of multiplication concepts.
This array has 4 rows with 3 stars in each row. This is referred to as a 4 x 3 array. This 4 x 3 array has 12 stars in it, or 4 x 3 = 12
Science
The students did an amazing job of presenting their bridges to the class. They were so excited to use their bridges to get off the island! I'm proud to report that everyone made it to safety! Great work!
