Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and Spring Break! I can't believe that it's already April. Where has the time gone?
Following is the Curricular Update for the week:
Writng Workshop
We began our week by filling in a "Spring Break News "graphic organizer.
Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month! Throughout the month we will be reading and writing various forms of poetry written by our feature author, Shel Silverstein.
We started our week by reading "Deaf Donald" from A Light in the Attic. The students were asked to turn this poem into a rebus. A rebus is a poem that uses pictures or symbols in place of actual words. Rebuses are helpful ways to build reading and writing skills, while incorporating art.
We also learned how to write a concrete poem using "Circle" from Every Thing On It. Concrete poetry uses the actual arrangement of words in a shape or other design to convey the subject or idea of the poem.
The students loved sharing their concrete poems during "author's chair."
Reading Workshop
One of my favourite books is the "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. Although its not a poetry book, I still really wanted to read it to the students. This book offers a wonderful interpretation of the gitt of giving and the acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.
During reading workshop we began our novel study of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. This a classic children's book about five kids who win a chance to tour Willy Wonka's mysterious candy-making operation.
Math
This week the following concepts were covered in math:
- finding patterns in the multiplication of even numbers and practicing multiplication facts for even numbers, particularly for 2, 4, and 6.
- finding patterns in the multiplication of odd numbers and practicing multiplication facts for odd numbers, particularly for multiples of 3 and 7.
- gain confidence with multiplication facts and applications.
The students also enjoyed learning a new multiplication game called "multiplication elimination."
Social Studies
This week we began our study of Tunisia. We will be compiling our learning into an interactive lapbook.
PE
The focus in PE this week was to teach the students baseball lead up games.
Art
We have been extremely busy preparing for our "Celebration of the Arts" coming up next week. Each grade level has been assigned an artist study project. Our class will be featuring an art project inspired by the artist Georgia O'Keefe. We will have our art on display for you to enjoy during our Celebration of the Arts - Art Gala on Thursday from 5-7pm. We hope to see you there!
Here is just a sneak peak of our O'Keefe art project.
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
