What a wonderful week we had celebrating the arts at Robina Baker. Each day the students enjoyed a special performance arranged by our Celebration of the Arts co-ordinator, Miss Coleman.
On Monday Kym Simon sang and played the guitar for us.
On Tuesday Mark Kuntz drummed for the school and led an individual workshop for each class.
On Wednesday, we enjoyed the rhythmic gymnastics demonstration done by the Arabesque Rhythmic's club.
We were lucky to have a special performance by two of our very own students who dance with Devon School of Dance.
On Thursday the John Maland Drama Class performed for the school.
We also had a special guest come to our classroom to teach us about improv.
We had our Grade Finale on Friday with musical performances by the students of RBES.
Art Gala
Thank you to the parents and family members who were able to come out to our Art Gala on Thursday night. Our class was given the artist Georgia O'Keeffe as our inspiration when creating art to display during the gala. We chose to recreate O'Keeffe's "purple petunia" by painting paper for the petals.
We also had our "Winter Birch Trees" and "Owl Silhouettes" on display during the gala.
The students enjoyed going on a gallery walk and leaving comments in the boxes of their favourite works of art.
Thursday was Jersey Day to honour the Humbolt Broncos.
VIP
We had a great week celebrating our VIP. Thank you for sharing your special items and inviting your mom to come in to share your letter with the class. It truly is our favourite part of the week!
Congratulations to our student of the week!
Congratulations to two of our students for making it to "role model" five times. Way to go!
Curriculum Update
Writing Workshop
To celebrate poetry month, the students wrote two types of poems this week. The first poem they wrote was a visual poem. Visual poetry uses text, images, or symbols to help convey the meaning of the
poem. With this type of poetry, the visual arrangement of the elements of
the poem is more important than the words in conveying its meaning. We read the poem “Lazy Jane” from Where the Sidewalk Ends. We discussed how the way the
poem is displayed on the page is key to the meaning of poem.
The second poem was an acrostic poem. An acrostic poem uses the letters of a word or name to begin
each line of the poem, and each line must in turn relate to the
word. Anything goes when it comes to acrostics, and they’re a
fun way to add a personal touch to a poem. We studied an original
example, which used Shel as a subject, and then created our own acrostic masterpiece!
Reading Workshop
The students are really enjoying our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory novel study. This week we focus on summarizing the chapters using "Somebody Wanted But So Then."
Word Study
The students wrote rainbow sentences using five words from this week's spelling words.
Math
We concluded our multiplication unit by reviewing and writing our unit test this week.
The students enjoyed play Multiplication Battleship to practice their math facts.
Social Studies
We finished assembling our lapbooks and focus on the "traditions and celebrations" of Tunisia.
Have a great weekend everyone!
