We had a short, but productive week in 3A.
The students really enjoyed the "Cultural Wheel" presentation by Ian Porteous. His presentation was based on his book – The Cultural Wheel: Transforming your Classroom through Cultural Restoration, which discusses the aspects of our society moving towards integration (well-being) and disintegration (unhealthy). Ian's performance integrated a little bit of folklore, music and school participation to create a celebration of culture restoration.

Writing Workshop
This week we read acrostic poetry, discussing and recognizing the pattern, flow of ideas, and word choice involved in the poems. During Writer's Workshop, the students developed acrostic poems for the word "SPRING." They used exciting verbs and descriptive adjectives related to the topic of spring in their poems. These poems were typed into the computer and become the tails on kites that the students made in art.
The students also wrote Rhyming poems using Shel Silverstein's poem "I Don't Know" as a mentor text. Rhyming poetry is one of the most common types of poetry—and sometimes the
most fun! Rhymes can happen in many different patterns within a poem, such
as every line, every first and third line, or every second and fourth line. Most of
Shel Silverstein’s poems use rhyme. The students enjoyed giving it a try themselves.
Reading Workshop
The students continue to attend reading groups during block 3. My group is really enjoying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while focusing on reading strategies to increase their comprehension.
The students also completed comprehension assessments to determine their current reading levels.
The students were so excited to start our Division Unit in math. The following curricular objectives were covered:
- Sharing - Knowing the Number of Sets - identify the number of objects in a set given the total number of objects divided into a given number of sets
- Sharing - Knowing How Many in Each Set - determine the number of sets given a number of objects to be divided equally and the number in each set
- Sets - Identify the objects to be divided into sets, the number of sets and the number of objects in each set
- Two Ways of Sharing - Recognize which information is provided and which is absent among: how many sets, how many in each set and how many altogether
Social Studies
This week we read about Goods and Services in Tunisia and added the information into our lapbooks.
PE
We had a great time this week doing "Drum Fit" in Phys Ed!
Art
During art the students created an optical illusion on paper kites using markers. We started our lesson by examining a colour wheel and discussing complimentary colours. I had students choose two complimentary colours for this project. To get started the students had to locate the centre of the page and divide their kite into 12 sections. Then they had to draw "happy face" and "sad face" curved lines in alternate sections. The students coloured these sections with markers, alternating one coloured and one blank space. The kites were finished off with some crayon shading and outlining with a sharpie. The acrostic poems written during Writer's Workshop became the ribbons on the kites.
Have a great weekend
